Controversies
In 2013, Allan Velasco was defeated in his congressional bid by Regina Ongsiako Reyes. He filed an election protest on the ground that his opponent was an American Citizen and got a favorable decision from the COMELEC and also from the Supreme Court. Initially, Congress under Speaker Feliciano Belmonte refused to honor the Supreme Court Decision but on February 1, 2016, the House of Representatives allowed him to assume office.
On October 12, 2020, Lord Allan Velasco was elected as House Speaker by 187 congressmen outside the plenary session hall of the House of Representatives. He replaced Congressman Alan Peter Cayetano who refused to honor their term sharing agreement.
