Australian Historical Events is a daily guide to the important events that shaped Australia to what it is today. It is a compilation of significant events for the month of March including the birth and death of famous Australians as well as laws promulgated by authorities. 2 1963 Birth: Anthony Norman Albanese, the 31st prime minister of Australia. He is the first Italian-Australian to become prime minister.
3 1986 The Australian Act of 1986 which formally severed all legal ties between Australia and the United Kingdom except for the monarchy, took effect.
5 1803 Ex-convict George Howe printed the Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser, the first newspaper in Australia.
7 1856 The foundation stone for the construction of St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral in Adelaide, South Australia was put in place by the vicar general, Father Michael Ryan.
11 1947 Sir William John McKell begins his term as the 12th Governor-General of Australia.
15 1914 St Patrick’s Church in Adelaide was inaugurated by Archbishop John O’Reily.
19 1932 The iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge, the eighth longest spanning-arch bridge in the world and the tallest steel arch bridge, was inaugurated.
23 1961 The National Library of Australia (NLA) was established in Parkes, Canberra.
28 2014 General Sir Peter John Cosgrove begins his term as the 26th Governor-General of Australia.
29 1901 The two-day inaugural election for members of the first Australian Parliament was held.
31 1921 The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) was established as a part of the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
31 2000 The ASX 200 index makes its debut on the Australian stock market with a value of of 3133.3.
