1 1987 The Australian Securities Exchange Ltd or ASX was formed through incorporation under legislation of the Australian Parliament as an amalgamation of the six state securities exchanges.
3 1910 Death: Catherine Helen Spence, first Australian female political candidate after standing (unsuccessfully) for the Federal Convention held in Adelaide.
8 1933 A secession referendum was held in the Australian state of Western Australia, on the proposal that the state withdraw from the Australian Federation.
9 1867 Birth: John Christian Watson, the third prime minister of Australia
12 1859 Diocese of Brisbane was established. Previously, it was part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney.
19 1770 The first expedition of Lieutenant James Cook became the first Europeans to reach and record observations of the southeastern coast of Australia near today’s Point Hicks.
22 1842 John Bede Polding was appointed as the first archbishop of Sydney.
27 1904 Chris Watson takes oath as the third prime minister of Australia.
28 1951 The University of Sydney awarded the first PhD to William H. Wittrick from the Faculty of Engineering.
29 1627 Lieutenant James Cook and crew made their first landfall on the continent of Australia at a beach now known as Silver Beach on Botany Bay (Kamay Botany Bay National Park).
30 1969 Sir Paul Meernaa Caedwalla Hasluck starts his term as the 17th Governor-General of Australia.
