Kanchanaburi Province Thailand

Kanchanaburi Province is a province of Thailand located in the Western Region. It is bounded on the north by the province of Tak, on the east by Uthai Thani, Suphan Buri, and Nakhon Pathom, on the south by Ratchaburi, and on the west by Myanmar. (See map below.)

In ancient times, Kanchanaburi Province was under the Khmer Empire as can be seen from the ruins at Prasat Muang Sing. During the Ayutthaya period, the Burmese entered the Kingdom through this province. Then during during World War II, the Japanese built the now infamous Death Railway as a supply route to Burma. Employing thousands of prisoners-of-war (POW) and Asian laborers, many of whom died of starvation and diseases, the railway was finished just when the Japanese were retreating. Eventually, the railway was rendered unusable at the end of the war.

Located 143 kilometers west of Bangkok, the province has an area of 19,483 km2, the third largest in the country. In 2015, it had a population of more than 840,000, one of the least populated provinces. Topography is mostly mountainous in the north and west. Major rivers are Kwae Yai and Kwae Noi that merged to form the Mae Khlong River which in turn flows all the way south to the Gulf of Thailand. Due to its varied attractions, many tourists visit the province in droves, making it one of the most visited places in Thailand.
