Biography
During his student years, Cuartero actively honed his writing and editorial skills, serving as the news writer for The Flame and as circle and associate editor for UST’s official student publication, The Varsitarian.

Beginning his career shortly after graduation, he initially worked in broadcast journalism with KBS Public Affairs before transitioning to print media with Mr. & Ms. Magazine. He spent 36 consecutive years at the Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation, where he held various editorial roles, notably serving as the first entertainment editor of Tempo, the Manila Bulletin’s English-language tabloid paper. Following his retirement from full-time editing in 2018, he has continued his literary presence as a columnist for the Manila Bulletin and Tempo, writing the widely followed life and entertainment column PASSERBY, and serving as Lifestyle Editor for The Market Monitor.

Beyond print, Cuartero passed on his knowledge by teaching media studies at UST’s Faculty of Arts and Letters from 1997 to 2018, where he served as program coordinator for the journalism department and publication adviser for The Flame. In December 2025, he was appointed as a member of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).

Throughout his career, Cuartero has received significant professional recognition. His honors include winning the Grand Prize in the Primer Premio de Periodismo awarded by Instituto Cervantes in 2000, the First Prize at the LaSallian Scholarum Awards in 2007, and the Environment Journalist of the Year award at the 2010 Binhi Awards given by the Philippine Agricultural Journalists. He was also recognized as an outstanding alumnus through UST’s AB Gantimpala Award in 2012, and earned three consecutive Nick Joaquin Literary Awards SALUTE honors from the Philippines Graphic in 2023, 2024, and 2025 for his fiction and poetry.
