7/31/2026 (Friday) Today’s Gospel reading: Matthew 13:54-58
54 Jesus came to his native place and taught the people in their synagogue.
They were astonished and said, “Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds?
55 Is he not the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother named Mary and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?
56 Are not his sisters all with us? Where did this man get all this?”
57 And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and in his own house.”
58 And he did not work many mighty deeds there because of their lack of faith.
7/31/2026 (Friday) Today’s Gospel reflection / sermon / homily: Matthew 13:54-58
Sometimes the greatest obstacle to faith is not a lack of evidence but an excess of familiarity. In this passage, the people who heard Jesus speak were amazed by His wisdom and the mighty works associated with Him. Yet instead of opening their hearts, they allowed what they already knew about His earthly background to become a barrier. They had seen Him grow up. They knew His family. Because they thought they knew everything about Him, they failed to recognize who He truly was.
The same danger exists today. We can become so accustomed to God’s presence, His Word, and even His blessings that we stop expecting Him to do something new in our lives. Familiarity can quietly replace faith. Let the word HOUSE remind us how to keep our hearts open to God.
H – Honor God’s Presence
Every house becomes meaningful because of the people who live in it. Likewise, our hearts become sacred when we honor God’s presence. The people in Jesus’ hometown listened with curious minds but not with honoring hearts. Respect and humility are the foundation of genuine faith.
When we honor God, we recognize that His ways are higher than our assumptions. We stop judging His work by outward appearances and begin welcoming Him with reverence. Honor prepares the heart for miracles because it acknowledges that God can work in unexpected people, places, and circumstances.
O – Open Your Heart Beyond the Ordinary
The villagers saw only the ordinary aspects of Jesus’ life. They overlooked the extraordinary work of God unfolding before them. They allowed familiarity to blind them to divine truth.
God often works through ordinary moments: a simple conversation, a quiet prayer, a humble servant, or an unexpected challenge. If our hearts remain open, we begin to see God’s fingerprints everywhere. Faith grows when we look beyond appearances and recognize that God delights in using ordinary vessels for extraordinary purposes.
U – Understand Before You Judge
People quickly formed conclusions based on what they thought they knew. Their assumptions prevented deeper understanding.
How often do we do the same? We may underestimate others because of their age, education, occupation, or background. We may even underestimate ourselves because of our past failures.
God does not measure people the way the world does. He looks at the heart and sees possibilities that others cannot see. Before forming judgments, seek understanding. Ask what God may be accomplishing beneath the surface. A humble learner receives far more than a proud critic.
S – Strengthen Your Faith Through Humility
The passage reminds us that unbelief limits what people experience. Faith is not earned by intelligence or social status but nurtured through humility.
Humility admits, “I don’t know everything. Lord, teach me.” It welcomes correction, receives wisdom, and remains eager to learn. Proud hearts become closed houses with locked doors. Humble hearts become open homes where God is welcomed.
Every day offers opportunities to strengthen our faith through prayer, Scripture, acts of kindness, and trust during difficult seasons. Faith grows strongest when humility leads the way.
E – Expect God to Do New Things
One reason people missed God’s work was that they expected nothing extraordinary from someone so familiar. Low expectations often produce missed opportunities.
God continues to surprise those who trust Him. He can restore broken relationships, heal wounded hearts, open impossible doors, and transform ordinary lives into testimonies of His grace.
Never allow yesterday’s experiences to limit tomorrow’s possibilities. Every new day is another opportunity for God to reveal His wisdom, power, and love in ways you never imagined.
Our hearts are like a HOUSE. We choose whether its doors remain closed by pride and familiarity or open through faith and humility. Jesus still comes to every heart, inviting us to know Him more deeply than surface impressions or past experiences.
May we Honor God’s presence, Open our hearts beyond the ordinary, Understand before judging, Strengthen our faith through humility, and Expect God to do new things. When our spiritual house welcomes Christ with genuine faith, we become a place where His grace can dwell, His wisdom can shape us, and His transforming power can be seen by everyone around us.
May our lives never say, “I already know enough about God,” but instead continually pray, “Lord, show me more of who You are.” For those who keep the doors of faith open will discover that God’s greatest works are often waiting just beyond the limits of familiarity.
