25 At that time Jesus exclaimed: “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike.
26 Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.
27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”
7/17/2024 (Wednesday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Matthew 11:25-27
The gospel reading above is a beautiful passage where Jesus offers a profound prayer of thanksgiving and reveals the intimate relationship between the Father and the Son. These verses offer a deep well of inspiration, reminding us of the simplicity of faith, the accessibility of God’s revelation, and the intimate knowledge of God through Jesus.
At that time, Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.” Jesus expresses gratitude that God’s truth is revealed not to the worldly wise and learned but to those with a childlike heart. This challenges our often prideful reliance on human wisdom and intellect. True understanding of God’s kingdom comes from a place of humility and openness, like that of a child. It is a reminder that spiritual insight is not about intellectual achievement but about the simplicity of faith and trust in God.
In verse 26, Jesus acknowledges that this divine strategy is pleasing to the Father. God’s ways are often counterintuitive to human logic, yet they are perfect in their purpose. This should encourage us to embrace humility, acknowledging that our understanding is limited and that true wisdom comes from God. It reassures us that we don’t need to have all the answers or be scholars to grasp the deep truths of the kingdom of heaven. Instead, a receptive and humble heart is what God values.
The passage continues with Jesus stating, “All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” This reveals the unique and profound relationship between the Father and the Son. It speaks to the divine authority and intimate knowledge shared between them. Jesus, as the Son, is the ultimate revelation of God. Through Him, we come to know the Father. This is a powerful assurance that our understanding of God is deeply rooted in our relationship with Jesus.
For us today, this passage is a call to cultivate a childlike faith, marked by humility and openness. It reassures us that God’s revelation is accessible to all who approach Him with a sincere heart. Furthermore, it invites us into a deeper relationship with Jesus, through whom we come to know the Father intimately. As we embrace this childlike faith and seek to know Jesus more, we can experience the fullness of God’s love, wisdom, and grace in our lives. This intimate knowledge transforms us, guiding us to live in alignment with God’s will and purpose.
