Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist
6/24/2026 (Wednesday) Today’s Gospel reading: Luke 1:57-66, 80
57 When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child she gave birth to a son.
58 Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her.
59 When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child, they were going to call him Zechariah after his father,
60 but his mother said in reply, “No. He will be called John.”
61 But they answered her, “There is no one among your relatives who has this name.”
62 So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called.
63 He asked for a tablet and wrote, “John is his name,” and all were amazed.
64 Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God.
65 Then fear came upon all their neighbours, and all these matters were discussed throughout the hill country of Judea.
66 All who heard these things took them to heart, saying, “What, then, will this child be?” For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.
80 The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the desert until the day of his manifestation to Israel.
6/24/2026 (Wednesday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Luke 1:57-66, 80
The Gospel passage tells us about the birth of John the Baptist, a child whose arrival brought joy, wonder, and renewed faith. What seemed impossible became possible through God’s power. The people around him were amazed because they realized that God was actively working in their midst. As John grew, he prepared for a special mission that would help others encounter the Lord. His story reminds us that every life has a purpose and that God often works in ways that surprise us.
A simple way to remember the lessons of this Gospel is through the word CHILD.
C – Celebrate God’s faithfulness.
The birth of John was a reminder that God keeps His promises. There had been years of waiting, uncertainty, and disappointment, yet God fulfilled His plan at the right time. We, too, experience seasons when prayers seem unanswered. We may wonder whether God has forgotten us. But this Gospel encourages us to celebrate God’s faithfulness even before we see the results. What God promises, He fulfills in His perfect timing.
H – Honor God’s plan.
John’s parents chose obedience over public opinion. Many expected them to follow tradition, but they followed God’s direction instead. Sometimes God asks us to make choices that others may not understand. Following His plan may require courage and trust. When we honor God’s will above human expectations, we open ourselves to greater blessings and deeper peace.
I – Inspire others through obedience.
The obedience shown by John’s family became a powerful witness to their community. Their faith caused others to reflect on what God was doing. Our actions can inspire people more than our words. A life of honesty, kindness, forgiveness, and prayer can lead others closer to God. Every act of faith becomes a testimony that God is alive and at work.
L – Listen to God’s voice.
John’s life was shaped by God’s guidance from the very beginning. Before we can fulfill our mission, we must learn to listen. In a noisy world filled with distractions, God’s voice is often heard in moments of prayer, silence, Scripture, and reflection. Listening allows us to recognize His direction and avoid being led by fear, pride, or confusion.
D – Develop the gifts God has given you.
The Gospel tells us that John grew and became strong in spirit. Growth did not happen overnight. It required time, preparation, and faithfulness. God has given each of us talents, abilities, and opportunities. We should not neglect them. Whether it is the gift of teaching, serving, encouraging, leading, or creating, every gift can be used for God’s glory. Spiritual maturity comes when we intentionally develop what God has entrusted to us.
The story of John the Baptist reminds us that God sees potential where others see limitations. He can use ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary purposes. The child who brought wonder to his neighbors eventually became a voice preparing hearts for something greater. In the same way, God is preparing each of us for a mission uniquely designed for our lives.
Whenever you need encouragement, remember CHILD:
C – Celebrate God’s faithfulness.
H – Honor God’s plan.
I – Inspire others through obedience.
L – Listen to God’s voice.
D – Develop the gifts God has given you.
As we practice these five principles, we grow stronger in faith and become instruments of God’s love in the world. Like John, may we allow God to shape our lives so that everything we do points others toward His goodness, mercy, and saving presence. Our greatest purpose is not to draw attention to ourselves but to prepare the way for God’s work in the hearts of others.
