Family Background and Childhood
Isko is the only child of Joaquin and Rosario Moreno from the poor province of Northern Samar in Eastern Visayas Region. The family was very poor because Joaquin’s meager salary as stevedore at Manila’s North Harbor was not enough to sustain the family’s financial needs. His mother was a plain housewife who earned small amounts of money washing clothes of well-off neighbors.

To help in the family’s budget, Isko went out on his own to look for ways to earn some pesos. He collected bottles, old newspapers and anything of value that can be sold to junk shops. Sometimes, he also picked up left-over foods from neighbors and restaurants to be recycled as the family’s dinner. Later, he began pushing his own cart to be filled with scraps.
