Chiang Rai Province Thailand

Chiang Rai Province is one of the provinces in the northern region of Thailand. In fact, it is the northernmost province of the country. It is bounded on the north by Myanmar, on the east by Laos, on the south by Phayao and Lampang, and on the west by Chiang Mai. (Please see map below) The province is part of the so-called Golden Triangle, the area intersected by Thailand, Laos, and Mynamar (Burma). This area was then notorious for drug smuggling.

Located 788 north of Bangkok, Chiang Rai has a total land area of 11,678 km2 and an estimated population of more than 1.2 million in 2015, many of which belong to ethnic minorities such as the Akhas, Karens, and Hmongs.
