6/8/2026 (Monday) Today’s gospel reading: Matthew 5:1-12

1 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him.
2 He began to teach them, saying:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.
6 Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.
12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

6/8/2026 (Monday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Matthew 5:1-12

presents one of the most beautiful teachings of Jesus about the kind of life that pleases God. The passage reminds us that true happiness and fulfillment do not come from wealth, popularity, power, or comfort alone. Real blessedness comes from having a heart that depends on God, seeks goodness, shows mercy, and remains faithful even during hardships.

The word “Blessed” comes from the Old English word “blētsian,” which originally meant “to consecrate” or “to make holy.” In the biblical sense, the Greek word used is “makarios,” which means deeply happy, spiritually fulfilled, and favored by God. It is not merely temporary happiness based on circumstances. A blessed person may still face trials, sadness, rejection, or struggles, yet deep within, there is peace, purpose, and hope because God is present in that person’s life.

Jesus described blessed people in ways that surprised many listeners. He spoke about humility, mercy, purity of heart, peacemaking, compassion, and perseverance. The world often praises pride, revenge, selfish ambition, and material success, but Jesus taught that the truly blessed life is rooted in love, humility, and trust in God.

To easily remember how to live a blessed life each day, we can use the word “BLESSED” as a mnemonic:

B – Begin with Prayer
Start every day by talking to God. A few sincere moments of prayer can guide your thoughts, decisions, and actions. Prayer keeps the heart connected to God even during busy days.

L – Love Others Generously
A blessed person learns to love without always expecting something in return. Small acts of kindness, encouragement, patience, and understanding can brighten another person’s life.

E – Empty Your Heart of Pride
Humility opens the door for grace. Admit mistakes, listen to others, and remember that every blessing comes from God. A humble heart learns and grows.

S – Serve with Joy
Jesus taught that greatness comes from serving others. Helping at home, supporting a friend, comforting the lonely, or volunteering for good causes are ways of becoming a blessing to the world.

S – Seek Peace Daily
Avoid unnecessary anger, gossip, and conflict. A peaceful person brings healing wherever he or she goes. Blessed people become bridge-builders instead of troublemakers.

E – Endure Trials with Faith
Difficulties are part of life, but God can use them to strengthen character and deepen faith. Trusting God during painful moments develops spiritual maturity and courage.

D – Do Good Consistently
Blessedness is not built in one moment but through daily choices. Honest work, faithful prayer, forgiveness, compassion, and integrity shape a life that honors God.

The Beatitudes reminds us that blessedness is not about having a perfect life. It is about having a heart transformed by God. A person may have little in material things yet still be rich in peace, kindness, faith, and hope. On the other hand, someone may possess everything outwardly yet feel empty inside.

Every day gives us an opportunity to choose the path of blessedness. When we pray, love, forgive, serve, and trust God, we become living reflections of His goodness. True blessedness is not found in what we own, but in who we become through God’s grace.
