John Arcilla started his career as a performer in several plays of Tanghalang Pilipino at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). He appeared as the lead actor in Orosman at Zafira, Walang Sugat, and Ryan Cayabyab’s Rizal musical trilogy: El filibusterismo (1993), Noli Me Tángere (1995), and Illustrado (1996). After a hit television commercial about a coffee brand, he became a sought after actor in the mainstream movie and television programs. Thereafter, he won many awards either as best actor or best supporting actor. In 2021, he became the first Filipino to win the Coppi Volpi (Volpi Cup) for Best Actor at the 78th Venice Film Festival held in Venice, Italy for his performance in the movie On The Job: The Missing 8.
