The town was founded on May 17, 1800.

Economy of Matnog

Matnog is an agricultural town where rice, corn, coconut and fish are the major products.

As the jump-off point to Eastern Visayas and Mindanao, it has one of the busiest seaport in the country. A large industrial area is planned by a Filipino-Japanese consortium.
