Karl Kendrick Chua is a Filipino economist and government official. On April 17, 2000, he was appointed as acting chief of the National Economic and Development Authority replacing resigned Secretary Ernesto Pernia. The position has the status of cabinet rank.
In 2000, Karl Chua finished a management engineering degree from Ateneo de Manila University. He proceeded to complete his masters in economics in 2003 and PhD in economics in 2011 at the University of the Philippines School of Economics. He specializes in fiscal policy and tax administration.
Dr. Chua was formerly an undersecretary of the Department of Finance. As the chief economist of the Strategy, Economics, and Results Group, he gave policy advice to the Duterte Administration’s economic team. In 2017, he got the nation’s attention when he vigorously defended the passage of controversial Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Act or Republic Act No. 10963 which he himself helped craft.
Previously, Chua worked for ten years at the World Bank office in Manila where he rose from research analyst to senior country economist. He taught mathematics and economics as a professional lecturer at the Ateneo de Manila University. His first job after graduation from college was systems analyst in Andersen Consulting/Accenture.
Karl Kendrick Chua is at present 41 years old.
