History

Long before the coming of the Spaniards, the area occupied by present-day Pantukan was settled by indigenous people called Mansakas and Muslims. It is believed that long ago, there were two powerful chieftains namely Datu Pantu and Datu Kan. Later, people called the place Pantukan, a combination of the two Datus’ names.

On November 13, 1936, the municipality of Pantukan was officially organized by virtue of Executive Order 64 issued by then Pres. Manuel L. Quezon.

In 1967, the huge Davao Province was divided into three provinces. The bario of Lupon was separated from Pantukan and became a town of Davao Oriental. The village of Mabini was elevated into another town.

The first appointed political leader of Pantukan was Municipal President Lam Laureano. He was succeeded by Bancas Mansaca. In 1938, Juan R. Caballero, Sr. became the first elected mayor.
