Prachuap Khiri Khan Province Thailand

Prachuap Khiri Khan Province is one of the provinces in the western region of Thailand. It is bounded on the north by Petchaburi, on the east by the Gulf of Thailand, on the south by Chumphon, and on the west by Myanmar.

“Prachuap Khiri Khan” means “city in the mountains”. It originated from the city of Muang Na Rang after the fall of the Ayutthaya Kingdom in 1767. Sam Roi Yot is a marsh land where King Mongkut (Rama IV) built an observation deck for the purpose of viewing the solar eclipse which he predicted in 1868. In the 1920s, the royal family led by King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) built palaces in an area that has grown to become the present resort town of Hua Hin.

Located 293 kilometers southwest of Bangkok, Prachuap Khiri Khan has a total land area of 6,367 km2 (ranked 33rd) and an estimated population of more than 539,000 in 2015. Topography consists of coastal plains and high mountains in the boundary with Myanmar.
