8/28/2025 (Thursday) Today’s Gospel reading: Matthew 24:42-51

Jesus said to his disciples:
42 “Stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.
43 Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into.
44 So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.
45 “Who, then, is the faithful and prudent servant, whom the master has put in charge of his household to distribute to them their food at the proper time?
46 Blessed is that servant whom his master on his arrival finds doing so.
47 Amen, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property.
48 But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My master is long delayed,’
49 and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eat and drink with drunkards,
50 the servant’s master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour
51 and will punish him severely and assign him a place with the hypocrites,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.”

8/28/2025 (Thursday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Matthew 24:42-51

The Gospel reading above reminds us that life is uncertain and every moment carries eternal importance. We may not know when the Lord will come or when our earthly journey will end, but we can choose how we live today. Readiness is not about living in fear. It is about living faithfully, responsibly, and purposefully.

The word HOUR can help us remember how to remain spiritually prepared.

H — Hold On to Faith

Waiting can be difficult, especially when prayers seem unanswered and God appears silent. During such times, we may become careless, discouraged, or spiritually sleepy. But faith continues even when there are no immediate signs of change.

Hold on to God when life feels uncertain. Continue praying, loving, serving, and doing what is right. Faithfulness is often formed in ordinary days when nothing dramatic seems to happen. Every quiet act of obedience prepares our hearts for our encounter with the Lord.

O — Obey in the Ordinary

Some people wait for a great opportunity before serving God. However, spiritual readiness is demonstrated through everyday responsibilities. It is seen in keeping our promises, completing our duties, caring for our families, helping those in need, and treating people with dignity.

God entrusts each of us with something: time, abilities, relationships, resources, and opportunities. We should not waste them or use them selfishly. The faithful servant does not work only when someone is watching. True character appears in what we do when recognition is absent and accountability seems distant.

U — Use Every Opportunity

Every day gives us another opportunity to grow and do good. We can encourage someone, forgive an offense, correct a harmful habit, reconcile with a loved one, or begin something God has placed in our hearts.

Do not keep postponing what truly matters. We sometimes imagine that we have plenty of time, but tomorrow is never guaranteed. Say the loving words today. Offer your apology today. Begin your transformation today. A prepared life is not built through one impressive decision but through many faithful choices made hour after hour.

R — Remain Ready

Remaining ready does not mean abandoning our daily work and simply waiting. It means carrying out our responsibilities with integrity while keeping our hearts focused on God. We remain ready by choosing compassion over cruelty, humility over pride, and self-control over reckless living.

Our actions affect the people entrusted to us. Authority should never become an excuse for selfishness or mistreatment. Whether we lead a family, ministry, workplace, or community, God calls us to use influence to protect, nurture, and serve others.

This is your HOUR to live faithfully. Hold on to faith, obey in the ordinary, use every opportunity, and remain ready. Do not fear the uncertainty of tomorrow. Instead, fill today with goodness. When we live each moment with love, responsibility, and devotion, we will not be caught unprepared. We will welcome the Lord with peaceful hearts, knowing that we used our time well and remained faithful to what He entrusted to us.
