8/28/2026 (Friday) Today’s Gospel Reading: Matthew 25:1-13

Jesus told his disciples this parable:
1 “The Kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise.
3 The foolish ones, when taking their lamps, brought no oil with them,
4 but the wise brought flasks of oil with their lamps.
5 Since the bridegroom was long delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
6 At midnight, there was a cry, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
7 Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps.
8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’
9 But the wise ones replied, ‘No, for there may not be enough for us and you. Go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.’
10 While they went off to buy it, the bridegroom came and those who were ready went into the wedding feast with him. Then the door was locked.
11 Afterwards the other virgins came and said, ‘Lord, Lord, open the door for us!’
12 But he said in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.’
13 Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

8/28/2026 (Friday) Today’s Gospel Reflection / Homily / Sermon: Matthew 25:1-13

The parable of the ten virgins presents a powerful picture of waiting, preparation, and personal responsibility. Everyone in the story expected the bridegroom to arrive, but expectation alone was not enough. Some prepared for the delay, while others discovered too late that borrowed readiness could not replace personal preparation. The message is not meant to frighten us but to awaken us. God invites us to live each day with faith, wisdom, and purpose.

The word WISE can guide us in preparing our hearts for the Lord.

W — Watch with Hope

Spiritual watchfulness is more than looking for signs or worrying about the future. It means remaining attentive to God’s presence and direction today. We watch by noticing opportunities to love, forgive, serve, and grow.

Waiting can become tiring when answers are delayed or life does not unfold as expected. Yet delay does not mean that God has forgotten us. Hope keeps the heart awake. Continue praying even when nothing seems to change. Continue doing good even when no one notices. Faithful waiting prepares us to recognize God when He comes into our circumstances.

I — Invest in Your Inner Life

The lamps appeared similar, but the difference was revealed by what had been prepared within. In the same way, outward religion cannot replace a genuine relationship with God.

Invest time in prayer, reflection, worship, and learning. Allow God to heal hidden wounds, correct unhealthy attitudes, and strengthen weak areas of your character. The oil in our spiritual lives is formed through daily faithfulness. It grows every time we choose patience over anger, truth over deception, generosity over selfishness, and obedience over convenience.

S — Stay Faithful During Delays

Anyone can be enthusiastic at the beginning, but wisdom is proven through endurance. Some dreams take years to unfold. Some prayers require long seasons of waiting. During delays, discouragement may tempt us to become careless or give up.

Stay faithful in your responsibilities. Care for the people God has entrusted to you. Use your talents well. Do not allow disappointment to extinguish your light. Even when you feel tired, God can renew your strength. What seems like a delay may actually be a season of preparation for something greater.

E — Ensure Your Own Readiness

Others can encourage, teach, and pray for us, but they cannot build our relationship with God on our behalf. We cannot depend entirely on another person’s faith, goodness, or spiritual discipline. Readiness is personal.

Begin today. Forgive the person you have avoided. Correct the habit that is weakening you. Make peace where possible. Return to prayer. Do not wait for a crisis before taking your spiritual life seriously.

Choose to be WISE: watch with hope, invest in your inner life, stay faithful during delays, and ensure your own readiness. Keep your lamp burning through love, faith, and obedience. Then, whenever the Lord comes or a new door opens, you will not meet the moment with panic or regret. You will welcome it with peace, confidence, and a heart fully prepared.
