22 After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.
23 After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone.
24 Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it.
25 During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea.
26 When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear.
27 At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
28 Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”
29 He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.
30 But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
32 After they got into the boat, the wind died down.
33 Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”

8/9/2026 (Sunday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Matthew 14:22-33

Theme: Walking by Faith Above the Waves

Life often feels like a stormy sea. There are moments when the winds of fear, disappointment, sickness, financial struggles, or uncertainty seem stronger than our faith. In this Gospel passage, the disciples found themselves battling rough waters while Jesus came to them in the middle of the storm. Peter courageously stepped out of the boat and walked on the water, but when he shifted his attention from Jesus to the raging waves, he began to sink. This beautiful story reminds us that faith is not the absence of storms but the confidence that Christ is with us through them. The word WATER can help us remember how to live with unwavering faith.

W – Walk by faith, not by fear.
Peter experienced something impossible because he dared to trust. Before he walked on the water, he first believed that Jesus could make the impossible possible. Every believer is invited to leave the comfort of the “boat” and take steps of faith. Sometimes God calls us to forgive someone who hurt us, begin a new ministry, share our faith, or keep trusting despite unanswered prayers. Fear keeps us trapped, but faith moves us forward. Great miracles often begin with one courageous step.

A – Always keep your eyes on Jesus.
Peter walked safely while his attention remained fixed on Jesus. The moment he focused on the wind and waves, fear entered his heart, and he started sinking. The same happens in our lives. When we focus only on problems, criticism, failures, or bad news, anxiety quickly overwhelms us. But when our eyes remain on Christ, we discover peace even when circumstances remain difficult. The storms may not disappear immediately, but our confidence grows because we know who is leading us.

T – Trust even when the storm continues.
Jesus did not stop the storm before inviting Peter to come. The wind was still blowing, and the waves were still crashing. This teaches us that God’s presence is often more important than immediate relief. Sometimes we pray for the storm to end, but God chooses instead to strengthen us while we are in it. Trust means believing that God is working even when we cannot see the outcome. Faith says, “I may not understand everything today, but I know I am not facing this alone.”

E – Expect His saving hand.
When Peter began to sink, he cried out for help. Jesus immediately reached out and lifted him up. Notice that Peter was not abandoned because he struggled. His imperfect faith was met by Christ’s perfect compassion. We all have moments when doubt overcomes us. We may stumble spiritually, emotionally, or morally. Yet God does not delight in watching His children fail. He extends His hand to those who humbly call upon Him. No failure is final when we allow Christ to lift us again. His grace is always greater than our weakness.

R – Respond with worship and renewed faith.
After witnessing Jesus’ power over the storm, the disciples responded with worship. Every answered prayer, every rescue, every blessing, and every trial overcome should deepen our faith and gratitude. Storms often become classrooms where we discover more about God’s faithfulness. Instead of allowing hardships to make us bitter, let them make us better. Let every challenge strengthen your confidence that Jesus truly has authority over every wave in your life.

Today, you may be facing your own rough waters. Perhaps you are worried about your family, your health, your future, or your calling. Remember WATER:

W – Walk by faith, not by fear.
A – Always keep your eyes on Jesus.
T – Trust even when the storm continues.
E – Expect His saving hand.
R – Respond with worship and renewed faith.

The same Lord who walked upon the water still walks beside His people today. He invites you not merely to survive the storm but to experience His presence in the middle of it. When your eyes remain fixed on Him, the waves lose their power to control your heart. Trust Him, take the next step in faith, and discover that with Christ, even the deepest waters become a pathway to a stronger faith.
