June 17 2025 Gospel Reading and Reflection

6/17/2025 (Tuesday) Today’s Gospel reading: Matthew 5:43-48

Jesus said to his disciples:
43 “You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.
44 But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
45 that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.
46 For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have? Do not the tax collectors do the same?
47 And if you greet your brothers only, what is unusual about that? Do not the pagans do the same?
48 So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

6/17/2025 (Tuesday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Matthew 5:43-48

When people tell us to guard our hearts and draw lines between friend and foe, Jesus calls to love not just those who love us, but to extend that love to those who challenge us, oppose us, and even wrong us. This is a higher calling, a radical way of living that defies instinct and expectation.

To love beyond limits is not about being passive or accepting injustice. It is about choosing a higher path when bitterness seems easier. It’s about showing mercy when retaliation feels justified. True strength lies not in overpowering others, but in mastering ourselves to choose compassion when contempt is expected and forgiveness when anger is deserved.

This kind of love is not conditional. It does not wait for apologies. It does not depend on whether the other person is kind, respectful, or deserving in the eyes of the world. It is generous, consistent, and courageous. It mirrors the kind of grace we ourselves have received, race that covered our faults and met us with kindness when we were least deserving.

When we choose to love in this way, we reflect a divine standard that transcends human limitations. We become mirrors of a greater light, one that shines equally on all people, regardless of their actions or intentions. The sun does not rise for the righteous only. The rain does not fall on one group and not another. The natural world offers blessings indiscriminately, and in doing so, models the impartial love we are called to show.

This love is not easy. It goes against the grain of pride, ego, and fear. It asks us to be vulnerable, to offer kindness where there may be no return. But in doing so, it reshapes the world around us. It breaks cycles of hatred, mends divisions, and awakens hearts that have grown cold.

Anyone can love those who are lovable. Anyone can be generous to those who reciprocate. But to extend kindness to the difficult, the distant, and even the hostile, that is divine. That is the love that transforms.

We are not called to be ordinary. We are called to rise above what is typical, expected, or easy. We are invited to live as a beacon of something greater, to set a new standard that surprises the world with its depth and beauty.

This doesn’t mean allowing others to harm you unchecked, nor does it mean erasing boundaries that keep you safe. It means choosing, even within those boundaries, to root your actions in compassion rather than resentment. It means seeing the humanity in those who have hurt you and choosing to live free of the chains of hate.

Imagine what the world would look like if more people embraced this way of life. If, instead of building walls, we built bridges. If, instead of nursing grudges, we sought healing. If every act of hostility was met with a quiet strength that responded not with vengeance, but with wisdom and peace.

This is not idealism. It is transformation. And it begins not in systems or governments, but in individual hearts willing to be stretched, willing to love courageously.

You have the power to be such a heart. To live generously. To love beyond reason. To bless where others curse. In doing so, you do more than simply follow a noble idea. You become a reflection of something eternal. You become light in darkness, a refuge in conflict, and a living example of the kind of love that can change the world.

Let your life speak not just through your beliefs, but through your actions. Let your love extend past comfort and beyond convenience. Love boldly. Love beyond limits. And in doing so, draw others into the beauty of a higher way.
