Joseph Espiritu is a Filipino businessman who came to national prominence due to his involvement in a high-profile plunder and graft case involving Philippine Senator Rodante Marcoleta. According to records filed by the Office of the Ombudsman before the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court, Espiritu allegedly made a substantial campaign donation of ₱25 million in January 2025 to support Marcoleta’s senatorial bid for the May 2025 midterm elections. This contribution was part of a larger ₱75 million pool of campaign funds provided over a four-day period by Espiritu, former Anakalusugan Representative Mike Defensor (who gave ₱30 million), and fellow businessman Aristotle Viray (who gave ₱20 million). Marcoleta publicly acknowledged receiving the funds but initially withheld the identities of the donors, stating that Espiritu and the others had requested anonymity.
Mr. Espiritu’s career and corporate affiliations have become heavily scrutinized due to the legal fallout from these donations. Because the combined contributions exceeded the ₱50 million threshold required under Republic Act No. 7080 (the Anti-Plunder Act) and were not disclosed in Marcoleta’s Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN) or Statement of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCE), the Office of the Ombudsman indicted Espiritu alongside Senator Marcoleta, Defensor, and Viray. Beyond the non-bailable plunder charge, Espiritu faces criminal charges for violating Presidential Decree No. 46, which penalizes private individuals for giving substantial gifts to public officials. As a result of the ongoing litigation, the Sandiganbayan issued a precautionary hold departure order against Espiritu to restrict his international travel while the anti-graft court reviews his specific charges.
