Jesus said:
27 “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand.
29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father’s hand.
30 The Father and I are one.”
5/11/2025 (Sunday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: John 10:27-30
In a world overflowing with uncertainty, noise, and distraction, it is easy to lose our sense of direction and purpose. Yet in the midst of this chaos, Jesus speaks words that offer unshakable hope and reassurance: “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
This verse reminds us of a simple yet profound truth — we are known by God. Not in a vague or distant sense, but intimately, personally, and completely. Like a shepherd who calls each sheep by name, Jesus knows our story, our wounds, our joys, and our fears. In a world where people often feel invisible or overlooked, these words break through like light in the darkness: “I know them.”
But He doesn’t just know us — we are invited into a relationship of trust and following. Listening to His voice means choosing to tune our hearts to His Word, quieting the world’s noise to hear His guidance. Following Jesus is not just a one-time decision; it’s a daily journey, one step at a time, led by the Shepherd who walks ahead of us.
Then come the words that form the bedrock of our assurance: “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.” This promise isn’t conditional on our perfection — it’s grounded in His grace. Eternal life is not just something in the distant future; it begins now, as we live in relationship with Christ, experiencing His peace, His purpose, and His presence.
Even more comforting is what follows: “No one will snatch them out of my hand.” Imagine the strength of that promise. Jesus is declaring that we are secure in Him — not because we are strong, but because He is. Our grip on Him may falter, but His grip on us never will. Nothing — not pain, failure, fear, or even death — can tear us from the hands that were pierced for our salvation.
And Jesus doesn’t stop there. He adds, “My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all.” The security of our salvation is not just in Christ alone, but in the unity and power of the Father and the Son. God the Father has entrusted us to Jesus, and together they hold us with a strength beyond comprehension. Jesus concludes with a bold declaration: “I and the Father are one.” This divine unity means that the promises made by Jesus are backed by all the authority of heaven.
What does this mean for us today? It means we can walk through life with confidence, not fear. It means that when storms rise, when doubts creep in, when we stumble or feel lost — we are still held. We belong to the Good Shepherd, and His voice still calls to us: “Follow Me.”
So take heart. You are not forgotten, not forsaken, and not fragile in the hands of God. You are secure, seen, and surrounded by divine love. Let this truth anchor your soul: Nothing can separate you from the hand of your Shepherd.
No matter where you are on your journey — weary, wandering, or strong in faith — Jesus is calling. His voice is near. Follow it, rest in it, and remember: You are forever held by the One who is greater than all.
