May 10 2026 Gospel Reading and Reflection

5/10/2026 (Sunday) Today’s gospel reading: John 14:15-21

15 Jesus said to his disciples: If you love me, keep my commandments.
16 And I will ask the Father, and he shall give you another Paraclete, that he may abide with you forever.
17 The spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it sees him not, nor knows him: but you shall know him; because he shall abide with you, and shall be in you.
18 I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you.
19 Yet a little while: and the world sees me no more. But you see me: because I live, and you shall live.
20 In that day you shall know, that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
21 He that has my commandments, and keeps them; he it is that loves me. And he that loves me, shall be loved of my Father: and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

5/10/2026 (Sunday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: John 14:15-21

In the Gospel reading, Jesus speaks tenderly to His disciples at a moment when their hearts are troubled. He knows that He will soon leave them physically, and yet His message is not one of abandonment, but of deeper presence. He assures them that love for Him is not merely expressed in words or feelings, but in a life that reflects His teachings. Love, in this sense, becomes visible through obedience, not as a burden, but as a response to a relationship.

The first important truth we encounter is this: love is lived, not just spoken. It is easy to say we love God when everything is going well, but Jesus invites us into something deeper. He calls us to a love that chooses faithfulness even when it is difficult, when forgiveness is hard, when patience is tested, and when doing the right thing costs us something. Obedience here is not about fear or obligation; it is about trust. It is the quiet confidence that God’s ways lead to life, even when we do not fully understand them.

The second key message is the promise of the Helper, the Spirit of truth. Jesus reassures His disciples that they will not be left alone. Though His physical presence will no longer be with them, the Spirit will come to dwell within them, guiding, strengthening, and reminding them of all that He has taught. This is a powerful reminder for us today. We are not meant to navigate life relying solely on our own wisdom or strength. In moments of confusion, fear, or weakness, God’s Spirit is present, gently leading us toward truth and peace.

This presence of the Spirit also means that our relationship with God is not distant or abstract. It is personal and alive. God is not far away; He is with us and within us. When we take time to listen, to pray, and to be still, we begin to recognize His voice in our daily lives, in our decisions, in our relationships, and even in our struggles.

The third truth is a promise of lasting connection. Jesus assures His followers that they will not be left orphaned. This is a deeply comforting image. It speaks to the human fear of being alone, forgotten, or abandoned. Yet Jesus counters that fear with assurance: we belong to Him, and He remains with us. Even when circumstances change, even when people come and go, His presence is constant.

Finally, Jesus speaks of a mutual indwelling, a profound union between Him, the Father, and those who love Him. This means that faith is not just about following rules; it is about entering into a living relationship. As we remain in Him, our lives begin to reflect His love more clearly. We become channels of His grace to others.

For us today, this Gospel is both an invitation and a challenge. It invites us to deepen our love for Christ, not in words alone, but in daily choices. It challenges us to trust in the presence of the Spirit, especially when we feel uncertain or alone. And it assures us that we are never abandoned, but always held in divine love.

As we go forward, may we strive to love more faithfully, listen more attentively to the Spirit, and live with the quiet confidence that Christ is with us, guiding, strengthening, and transforming us from within.
