9/24/2024 (Tuesday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Luke 8:19-21
In this Gospel reading, we encounter a moment where Jesus redefines the concept of family. His mother and brothers come to see Him, but they are unable to reach Him because of the crowd. When someone informs Jesus of their presence, He replies, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”
At first glance, this response may seem dismissive, but it holds a powerful spiritual truth: Jesus is teaching that the family of God extends beyond blood relations. It includes all those who listen to His teachings and actively live them out. In this brief passage, Jesus invites us into a deeper understanding of our place in God’s family, where obedience and faith are what connect us.
Hearing the Word
The first step in becoming part of God’s family is to hear His Word. The Bible constantly calls us to listen to God, and not just with our ears but with our hearts. To hear God’s Word means to truly internalize it, allowing it to shape our thoughts, attitudes, and actions. In today’s world, we are surrounded by voices competing for our attention—media, friends, society. But Jesus reminds us that there is one voice that should rise above all others: the voice of God.
The Scriptures are filled with His wisdom, guidance, and promises, but they must be received with openness. When we quiet the noise around us and tune our hearts to God’s Word, we are positioning ourselves to experience His transforming power. This step, though essential, is not enough on its own.
Putting the Word into Practice
Jesus emphasizes that those who hear God’s Word and put it into practice are His true family. Hearing without obedience is incomplete. True discipleship requires action. James 1:22 echoes this teaching: “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” When we act on the teachings of Christ, we demonstrate our trust in God’s wisdom and direction.
Obedience to God is often challenging. It requires us to surrender our will, make sacrifices, and trust God’s plan even when it doesn’t align with our own desires. Yet, it is in this obedience that we find freedom, peace, and purpose. When we follow God’s commands—whether in how we treat others, manage our resources, or handle difficult situations—we are living out our identity as His children.
The Family of God
Jesus’ words in Luke 8:19-21 are an invitation into a greater family, one bound not by blood but by faith and obedience. As believers, we are part of this divine family. We share a common purpose, mission, and eternal inheritance. When we live out the teachings of Jesus, we contribute to the strengthening of this spiritual family. We encourage one another, bear each other’s burdens, and build a community that reflects the love of God.
This truth is a source of great hope. Regardless of our background, past mistakes, or earthly circumstances, we are invited to belong to God’s family. In this family, we find belonging, purpose, and love that transcends the limits of this world.
Jesus is calling us to be more than just passive listeners. We are to hear His Word and act on it. By doing so, we take our place as His family, living out His will and reflecting His love to the world.
