5/31/2024 (Friday) Today’s gospel reading: Luke 1:39-56

39 Mary got ready and hurried off to a town in the hill country of Judea.
40 She went into Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth.
41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby moved within her. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit
42 and said in a loud voice, “You are the most blessed of all women, and blessed is the child you will bear!
43 Why should this great thing happen to me, that my Lord’s mother comes to visit me?
44 For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
45 Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled.”
46 And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
47 my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has remembered me, his lowly servant! From now on all people will call me blessed:
49 because of the great things the Mighty God has done for me, holy is his Name.
50 From one generation to another he shows mercy to those who honour him.
51 He has shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
52 He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and has lifted up the lowly.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.
54 He has kept the promise he made to our ancestors, and has come to the help of his servant Israel.
55 He has remembered to show mercy to Abraham and to all his descendants forever!”
56 Mary stayed about three months with Elizabeth and then went back home.

5/31/2024 (Friday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Luke 1:39-56

In the hills of Judea, Mary, carrying the light of the world within her, visits her cousin Elizabeth. This encounter, brimming with joy and divine recognition, serves as a profound reminder of the miraculous ways in which God works through ordinary lives.

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, exclaimed, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!” This moment illustrates the power of divine connection and the recognition of God’s plans manifesting through us. Elizabeth’s exclamation reminds us to celebrate the blessings in others and acknowledge the sacredness in our own lives.

Mary’s response, the Magnificat, is a beautiful testament to humility and praise. She glorifies the Lord, rejoicing in God her Savior, recognizing that He has looked with favor on her lowliness. “From now on all generations will call me blessed,” she declares, acknowledging the transformative impact of God’s intervention in her life. Her song is an anthem of hope and justice, proclaiming that God has “scattered those who are proud,” “brought down rulers from their thrones,” and “lifted up the humble.”

This passage encourages us to embrace our own journeys with faith and humility, trusting that God’s plan is the best for us. Like Mary, let us celebrate God’s work in our lives, recognize His blessings around us, and offer our own songs of praise. By doing so, we affirm our trust in God’s protection and providence and invite His grace to work through us, bringing hope and joy to the world.
