January 18 2024 Gospel Reading and Reflection

1/18/2024 (Thursday) Today’s gospel reading: Mark 3:7-12

7 Jesus withdrew toward the sea with his disciples. A large number of people followed from Galilee and from Judea.
8 Hearing what he was doing, a large number of people came to him also from Jerusalem, from Idumea, from beyond the Jordan, and from the neighborhood of Tyre and Sidon.
9 He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him.
10 He had cured many and, as a result, those who had diseases were pressing upon him to touch him.
11 And whenever unclean spirits saw him they would fall down before him
and shout, “You are the Son of God.”
12 He warned them sternly not to make him known.

1/18/2024 (Thursday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Mark 3:7-12

In the gospel passage above, we can immediately notice how the authoritative teachings and miraculous powers of Jesus impacted on so many people far and wide. In today’s social media crazy world, we can say he has become a powerful influencer. Today, influence often manifests through social media followers, viral content, and the ability to sway public opinion. However, the core of true influence, as exemplified by Jesus, lies not in numbers but in the ability to positively impact lives and bring about meaningful change. It’s about making a difference, whether in one life or a thousand.

Jesus’ ministry was marked by profound compassion, as He healed and taught the masses. In today’s world, where voices are many and diverse, those who lead with empathy and kindness often create the most lasting impact. Authentic influence arises from a genuine desire to improve the lives of others, not just to advance personal agendas. When we prioritize compassion in our actions, we resonate more deeply with those around us, fostering a more inclusive and empathetic society.

In an era where image and perception can be deceptive, authenticity stands out. Jesus’ influence grew not because He sought fame, but because He was authentically Himself – a teacher, healer, and a leader. Similarly, when we are true to ourselves and our values, our influence becomes more meaningful and sustainable. Authenticity breeds trust and respect, essential components for lasting influence.

Service was central to Jesus’ approach to leadership. In our times, the notion of serving others as a path to influence might seem counterintuitive in a culture often obsessed with self-promotion. Yet, it is through service that we can truly connect with others and build a foundation for positive influence. By focusing on how we can contribute to the welfare of others, we build communities and networks grounded in mutual respect and support.

The gospel narrative is telling us that true influence is not about power or popularity but about impacting lives positively through service and leading with compassion. May we embrace this paradigm in social media and outside of it. May we be able to use our collective voices to fight misinformation and promote the core gospel values of love, peace, and justice.
