10 1947 Birth: Kim Campbell, the 19th prime minister of Canada, the only woman to hold that office
12 1821 Birth: Sir John Joseph Caldwell Abbott, the third prime minister of Canada.
13 1989 Northern Quebec was hit by a nine-hour blackout caused by geomagnetic storm.
15 1827 The University of Toronto was founded by royal charter as King’s College, the first institution of higher learning in Upper Canada.
15 2023 The Canadian Pacific Railway was given approval to purchase and merge with the Kansas City Southern Railway for $31 billion.
20 1939 Birth: Martin Brian Mulroney, the 18th prime minister of Canada
23 1879 Birth: Louis-Joseph-Arthur Melanson, the first Archbishop of Moncton, New Brunswick.
25 1872 The Toronto Typographical Union (TTU) organized a strike known as the Toronto printers’ strike.
26 1663 The Séminaire de Québec, the forerunner of the Université Laval, was established by Bishop François de Laval.
30 1872 The Toronto Mail newspaper was founded by Thomas Charles Patterson.
30 1968 Birth: Celine Dion, the best-selling Canadian recording artist so far.
31 1949 Newfoundland and Labrador becomes a province of Canada.
31 1821 McGill University was established in Montreal, Quebec as McGill College by royal charter granted by King George IV.
31 2000 The Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 came into force.
