On April 28 in the year 1916, one of the most famous designers of sports cars was born in Emila-Romagna, Italy. His name is Ferruccio Elio Arturo Lamborghini, the founder of Lamborghini Trattori and Automobili Lamborghini.

Ferrucio Lamborghini was the son of grape farmers. He studied industrial arts and design at a local technical institute. During World War II, he joined the Italian Air Force where he was assigned to maintain vehicles. He was captured by the British and was taken as a prisoner of war for one year.

When Ferrucio Lamborghini returned home after his release from prison, he started repairing cars in his own garage. He began to join car racing competitions but when he accidentally mowed a restaurant with his car, his enthusiasm in motor racing started to wane. He shifted his interest to repairing and designing tractors. In 1948, he founded Lamborghini Trattori to design and manufacture agricultural machineries. Soon, he began to export his tractors to many far away countries such as Bolivia and South Africa. Later, he established two more companies to manufacture heating and air conditioning as well as hydraulic valves and equipment.

Ferrucio Lamborghini’s new found wealth allowed him to buy new and expensive cars but he was never contented with them. He had always found something to be improved whether the interior, the speed or the over-all design. His dream to own a high-performance car that could be used for touring the countryside could never be fulfilled by the current crop of car manufacturers.

In 1963, Ferrucio Lamborghini established Automobili Lamborghini. He went on to produce well-designed, stylish luxury cars that delighted the buying public. However, in the 1970s when the economic crisis set in, his companies encountered financial difficulties. He sold controlling stakes in both his tractor and automobile companies and retired in 1974. Since then, he pre-occupied himself with his other manufacturing businesses.

Ferrucio Lamborghini died of heart attack in 1993 at the age of 76. He married three times and had two children, a son and a daughter. At present, the company is a unit of the Volkswagen Group of Germany.
