4/28/2024 (Sunday) Today’s gospel reading: John 15:1-8

Jesus said to his disciples:
1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower.
2 He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit.
3 You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you.
4 Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.
5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.
6 Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned.
7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you.
8 By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.”

4/28/2024 (Sunday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: John 15:1-8

In this gospel reading, Jesus shares the profound metaphor of the vine and the branches, conveying a message that is both timeless and deeply inspiring. He describes Himself as the true vine and His Father as the gardener. We, His followers, are the branches, and our purpose is to bear fruit through our connection to Him.

This passage invites us to reflect on the nature of our spiritual lives and the importance of remaining intimately connected to Christ. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it remains attached to the vine, we cannot produce anything of lasting value without a continual, life-giving connection to Jesus. This teaches us that our endeavors, no matter how noble or ambitious, will be fruitless without the sustenance provided by our faith.

The gardener, God the Father, tends to us by pruning, which, while sometimes painful, is essential for our growth. Pruning removes aspects of our lives that are unfruitful, making room for a healthier, more productive growth. This process, though challenging, refines us and enhances our ability to thrive and contribute positively to the world around us.

Importantly, this scripture emphasizes the joy and fulfillment found in bearing fruit. It isn’t merely about personal success; it’s about producing outcomes that enrich and uplift others, reflecting the love and grace of God. It’s about legacy, the enduring impact of our lives on others, guided and empowered by our connection to Christ.

Let us then strive to live deeply rooted in the love and teachings of Jesus. As we do so, let us welcome God’s pruning hands, trusting that He shapes us with wisdom and love. Through this divine connection, may we not only survive but thrive, bearing rich, plentiful fruit that glorifies God and brings light to those around us. Let this be the aspiration of our hearts and the manifestation of our faith.
