David became an intern at Frederator Studios founded by animation producer Fred Siebart. Later, he found work at UrbanBaby, an online parenting firm. Tumblr is a micro-blogging and social networking website where users can post their thoughts, feelings, stories, photos and videos.

Tumblr was sold to Yahoo! in 2013 but David remained as CEO. From the sale, he became an instant multi-millionaire with his net worth estimated at $200 million. At present, Tumblr has more than 300 million users and more than a billion page views a week. In June, 2017, Tumblr became a unit of Verizon, the company that bought Yahoo!.

After his split with his girlfriend in 2014, David remained single.
