History of Aparri

The strategic location of Aparri on the mouth of the Cagayan River has made it an important trading post for Chinese and Japanese traders even before the coming of the Spaniards. In 1582, the vicinity of the mouth of the river was the scene of an on-and-off battle between the Spanish invaders and Japanese pirates.

Aparri was formally organized as a pueblo in 1605. On May 11, 1680, it was made a major stopover of Galleon Trade ships that ply the Manila-Acapulco trade route.

During the Second World War, Aparri was one of the first Philippine landing areas of the Japanese forces. It was however liberated in 1945 together with the rest of the country.

In 1903, the population of Aparri was 18,252. This number went up to 26,409 in 1939. After the war, it went down to 24,974. In 2020, the population stood at 68,839 with a voting population of 38,402.

On February 19, 2023, Vice Mayor Rommel Alameda was ambushed in Nueva Vizcaya by unknown assilants.

Economy of Aparri

Aparri is an agricultural town. Most of the people are employed as farmers and fishermen. Rice, fish, and tobacco are the most important products.

Trading plays a considerable part in the local economy. In the town center are the usual grocery and hardware stores which also function as wholesalers to nearby municipalities.

Fuga has been planned to be developed as an economic zone for many years but until now, there is very little economic activity in the island.
