In 1761, Patnongon was founded as a visita of Sibalon under the patronage of San Agustin. It was made an independent parish the following year.
In 1860, parish priest Manuel Asensio started the construction of the church. The structure was finished in 1895 during the time of Fr. Eustaquio Heria. It was bombed by the Americans during the liberation period in 1945 and rendered unusable.
Though agriculture is main source of livelihood of the local residents, tourism is fast becoming a rising industry with several resorts already operating especially along the coast of Patnongon. With the expected influx of tourists in the coming years, more commercial activities will follow.
Rice, muscovado, corn, sugarcane, vegetables, fish, hogs, poultry and eggs are the main agri-products. The town is the leading producer of muscovado in the whole Antique.
In early 2020, the national government through the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) inaugurated a small feed mill in Brgy. Magsaysay to be operated by the Patnongon Multi-Purpose Cooperative (PMPC). It is one of the projects under the Shared Service Facility program of the DTI. The full operation of such facility will be a great boost to the economic development not only of Patnongon but the whole province as well.
Along the coast are several resorts such as the Amihan Beach Resort in La Rioja, La Parola Orchids Beach Resort in Barangay Amparo, Igbarawan Garden Resort in Igbarawan, Bato-Bugtong Beach and resort in Igbarawan, D’Viking Beach Resort in Igbarawan, Apgahan Beach Resort and San Ramon Beach Resort.
