47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Here is a true child of Israel. There is no duplicity in him.”
48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.”
49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.”
50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.”
51 And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

9/29/2026 (Tuesday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: John 1:47-51

Jesus encounters Nathanael and reveals that God sees what is hidden in the human heart. The passage then opens our imagination to a greater spiritual reality: the connection between heaven and earth, represented by angels ascending and descending. Angels remind us that God’s presence is not limited to what our eyes can see. There is a spiritual dimension surrounding our ordinary lives, and God can use His heavenly messengers to accomplish His purposes.

A – Angels remind us that we are never alone.

There are moments when life feels lonely, especially when we are facing problems that nobody seems to understand. We may not see an angel standing beside us, but our faith tells us that God can send His messengers to guide, protect, strengthen, and encourage His people. Angels are reminders that heaven is not indifferent to what happens on earth.

Sometimes, God’s help comes through people. A friend calls at exactly the right moment. Someone offers encouragement when we are discouraged. A stranger gives us unexpected kindness. We may call these coincidences, but faith allows us to recognize that God can work through both visible and invisible means.

N – Never underestimate the unseen work of God.

We often measure reality by what we can see, touch, and explain. But Christian faith teaches us that not everything important is visible. Angels belong to this unseen spiritual reality. They serve God, worship Him, and carry out His purposes.

This does not mean we should become obsessed with angels or seek supernatural experiences. Our focus remains on God. Angels are not meant to replace our relationship with Him; they point us toward Him. Their role reminds us that God is greater than the circumstances immediately in front of us.

G – God’s protection can come in ways we do not recognize.

There may be moments when we look back and wonder how we escaped a danger, found the right direction, or received strength when we thought we had none left. We cannot automatically claim that every fortunate event was caused by an angel. But we can confidently believe that God watches over His children and can use His heavenly messengers according to His will.

This gives us courage. We do not have to live every day controlled by fear. We can move forward with the assurance that God is present even when His presence is invisible.

E – Expect God to be working, even in silence.

The image of angels moving between heaven and earth reminds us that God is active even when we cannot see what He is doing. Sometimes we pray and nothing seems to change. Sometimes we wait for an answer and wonder whether heaven has heard us. But silence does not mean absence.

God may be working in ways we cannot yet understand. Like Nathanael, we are invited to open our eyes to a reality greater than ourselves.

L – Let your life become a messenger of God’s love.

We may never see an angel, but we can become instruments through which God’s love becomes visible. A comforting word, a helping hand, a forgiving heart, or a simple act of kindness can bring a little piece of heaven into someone’s difficult day.

The message of the Gospel is not simply about angels. It is about a God who connects heaven and earth and invites us to recognize His presence.

So when you feel alone, remember: God sees you. When you feel afraid, remember: God is with you. When you cannot see the way forward, remember: heaven is not silent.

And perhaps today, instead of waiting for an angel to appear, we can ask ourselves: How can I become God’s messenger of hope to someone who needs it?
