26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.”
27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

9/15/2026 (Tuesday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: John 19:25-27

Theme: Love That Stands Beside Us

There are moments in life when words are no longer enough. There are moments when the only thing we can do is stay. This Gospel passage brings us to one of the most painful moments in the life of Jesus. At the foot of the cross stood Mary, His mother, together with other faithful women and the beloved disciple. She could not remove His suffering. She could not stop the crucifixion. But she remained there.

Her presence teaches us something powerful: sometimes love means simply refusing to leave.

Let us use the word MOTHER as a reminder of the kind of love God calls us to share.

M — Mercy

A mother’s love often begins with mercy. She sees the weakness of her child and responds not with condemnation but compassion. At the cross, Mary reminds us that compassion means staying close to those who are hurting. We may not be able to solve another person’s problems, but we can offer understanding, patience, and a listening heart.

O — Openness

Mary was open to God’s plan even when she could not understand everything that was happening. Life will sometimes bring situations we never expected. Instead of demanding that everything make sense immediately, we can learn to open our hearts to God. Faith does not always give us explanations; sometimes it gives us the courage to continue.

T — Trust

Standing at the cross required extraordinary trust. Mary had to trust God even while witnessing something heartbreaking. We, too, will face crosses that seem too heavy to understand. Trust does not mean that we will never cry or feel afraid. It means believing that God is still present even when His presence is difficult to recognize.

H — Hope

The cross looked like the end, but it was not the end of the story. Mary’s presence reminds us not to judge our lives by one painful chapter. A difficult season can become the doorway to something new. When everything appears lost, hold on to hope. God can bring life out of places that seem completely broken.

E — Empathy

Jesus did not ignore His mother’s loneliness. Even in His own suffering, He showed concern for her future by entrusting her to the beloved disciple. This teaches us to notice the needs of others even when we are carrying our own burdens. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give is simply saying, “I am here.”

R — Remain

Finally, R reminds us to remain faithful. Mary remained at the cross. The beloved disciple remained. Their presence became a testimony of love that did not run away when things became difficult.

Today, let us remember that genuine love is not measured only by what we do when everything is beautiful. It is revealed by whether we remain when someone is suffering.

Be a MOTHER in the lives of others: show Mercy, Openness, Trust, Hope, Empathy, and the courage to Remain.

And when your own cross becomes heavy, remember this: you do not have to carry it alone. God is near, and there are people who can stand beside you.
