8/24/2026 (Monday) Today’s Gospel Reading: John 1:45-51
45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”
46 But Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Here is a true child of Israel. There is no duplicity in him.”
48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.”
49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.”
50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.”
51 And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
8/24/2026 (Monday) Today’s Gospel Reflection / Homily / Sermon: John 1:45-51
Theme: OPEN Your Heart to God’s Greater Things
The Apostle Philip was so excited after meeting Jesus that he immediately searched for Nathanael. He believed that the One whom generations had been waiting for had finally come. Nathanael, however, was doubtful. He could not imagine anything remarkable coming from such an ordinary and unimportant place. Instead of arguing with him, Philip simply invited him to come and discover the truth personally.
This encounter teaches us to remain OPEN when God comes to us in unexpected ways.
O – Overcome Your Prejudices
Nathanael almost missed meeting Jesus because of his negative opinion about where Jesus came from. Like him, we sometimes judge people according to their hometown, education, job, appearance, social status, or past mistakes. We may believe that God can use only impressive people or work through important places.
But God often hides extraordinary blessings inside ordinary circumstances. The person we ignore may carry the encouragement we need. The simple opportunity we reject may lead us toward our purpose. We must overcome prejudice because God’s grace is not limited by human expectations.
P – Personally Encounter Jesus
Philip did not force Nathanael to believe. He invited him to meet Jesus personally. Faith cannot depend only on what our parents, friends, teachers, or religious leaders tell us. Their testimony may guide us, but each of us must develop a personal relationship with Christ.
Come to Jesus through prayer. Meet Him in Scripture, worship, service, silence, and the needs of others. Bring your questions and doubts honestly. Jesus is not threatened by sincere questions. When we approach Him with an honest heart, uncertainty can become understanding and hesitation can become faith.
E – Embrace Being Fully Known
Before Nathanael could explain himself, Jesus showed that He already knew him deeply. Nathanael discovered that he was seen, understood, and valued. The same is true for us. Jesus knows the struggles we hide, the tears we never show, and the prayers we cannot express.
Being fully known by God should not frighten us; it should comfort us. We do not need to pretend before Him. He sees our weaknesses but still calls us. He knows our failures but continues to offer us a future. His knowledge of us is joined with mercy and love.
N – Notice the Greater Things Ahead
Nathanael’s first encounter with Jesus was only the beginning. Jesus invited him to expect greater revelations and deeper experiences of God’s presence. Faith opens our eyes to possibilities beyond what we currently see.
Perhaps today you feel trapped by disappointment, doubt, or limited opportunities. Do not decide that your story is finished. God may be preparing something greater than your present circumstances suggest. Remain open, take the next faithful step, and allow Jesus to lead you.
Overcome your prejudices. Personally encounter Jesus. Embrace being fully known. Notice the greater things ahead. When your heart is OPEN, an ordinary invitation can become the beginning of an extraordinary journey with God.
