Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord
8/6/2026 (Thursday) Today’s Gospel reading: Matthew 17:1-9
1 Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
2 And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light.
3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him.
4 Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”
6 When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid.
7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid.”
8 And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone.
9 As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, “Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

Theme: LISTENING is the Path to Transformation
There are moments in life when God allows us to see a glimpse of His glory. These moments strengthen us before we face difficult days. In the Gospel reading above, Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. There they witnessed His divine glory shining before them. Moses and Elijah appeared with Him, representing the Law and the Prophets, showing that everything pointed to Christ. The disciples were overwhelmed and wanted to remain on the mountaintop forever. But God had a greater purpose. They could not stay on the mountain; they had to return to the valley where people needed hope, healing, and salvation.
This passage reminds us that spiritual experiences are not meant merely to amaze us; they are meant to transform us. The best response is found in one simple word: LISTEN.
L – Look to Jesus
The disciples saw many extraordinary things, but in the end their attention was directed to Jesus alone. It is easy to become fascinated by miracles, gifted people, traditions, or emotional experiences. Yet the center of our faith is always Christ.
When life becomes confusing, keep your eyes on Him. Circumstances change, people disappoint us, but Jesus remains the same. Looking to Him gives us confidence to keep moving forward.
I – Invite God’s Presence Daily
The mountain became a place of worship because Jesus was there. Likewise, our homes, workplaces, and even ordinary routines become sacred when we intentionally welcome God’s presence.
You do not have to climb a literal mountain to meet God. Spend time each day in prayer, reading Scripture, and quiet reflection. Those daily encounters strengthen your heart for the challenges that lie ahead.
S – Surrender Your Own Plans
Peter wanted to build shelters and stay where everything felt glorious and safe. His desire was understandable, but it was not God’s plan.
We often cling to moments of comfort and resist change. However, God’s purpose is not to keep us where life is easy but to prepare us for faithful service. Sometimes God says, “It’s time to leave the mountain.” Surrendering our plans allows Him to accomplish something far greater than we imagined.
T – Trust God Through Every Valley
After the glorious experience, Jesus led His disciples back down the mountain. Waiting below were suffering, opposition, and eventually the road to the cross.
The Christian life is not lived only during spiritual highs. Faith is proven in the valleys—in sickness, disappointment, uncertainty, and hardship. The same Lord who reveals His glory on the mountain also walks beside us through every difficult season. We do not need to fear because His presence never leaves us.
E – Embrace Transformation
The disciples were forever changed after seeing Christ’s glory. Although they did not fully understand everything at that moment, the experience prepared them for future trials.
Every encounter with God should change the way we think, speak, forgive, serve, and love. True worship is not measured by how inspired we feel during a prayer meeting but by how faithfully we live afterward. God’s desire is not merely to impress us but to transform us into people who reflect His character.
N – Never Stop Listening to God
The most important message from the mountain was simple: listen to Jesus.
Many voices compete for our attention today including social media, opinions, fears, ambitions, and distractions. Some voices encourage us, while others pull us away from God’s will. Wisdom comes from learning to recognize the Shepherd’s voice above all the noise.
Listening to Jesus means obeying Him even when His instructions challenge our comfort. It means trusting His Word above our feelings, following His direction above popular opinion, and allowing His truth to shape every decision we make.
The disciples came down the mountain stronger because they had seen Christ’s glory and heard God’s voice. We may not experience dazzling visions, but every day we have the opportunity to encounter Jesus through His Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. As we LISTEN to Him, our faith grows, our hearts are transformed, and we become lights that reflect His glory to a world longing for hope.
May we never seek only mountaintop experiences. Instead, may we carry the light of Christ into the valleys of everyday life, where His love is needed most. Remember: those who truly LISTEN to Jesus will be transformed by His presence and empowered to transform the lives of others.
