7/26/2026 (Sunday) Today’s Gospel reading: Matthew 13:44-52

Jesus said to his disciples:
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls.
46 When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.
47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind.
48 When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away.
49 Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous
50 and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.
51 “Do you understand all these things?” They answered, “Yes.”
52 And he replied, “Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.”

7/26/2026 (Sunday) Gospel reflection / sermon / homily: Matthew 13:44-52

In Matthew 13:44-52, Jesus presents a series of short parables that reveal the incomparable value of God’s Kingdom. Through the images of hidden treasure, a priceless pearl, a fishing net, and a wise householder, He reminds us that following God is not merely adding another priority to life—it is discovering the greatest treasure we could ever possess.

Use the word VALUE as a mnemonic to remember this life-changing message.

V – Verify What Truly Matters

The man who discovered the hidden treasure and the merchant who found the precious pearl were willing to give up everything because they recognized something far more valuable. They did not see sacrifice as loss but as a joyful investment. Likewise, we should constantly examine our priorities. Many things appear valuable, but only God’s Kingdom has eternal worth. Wise people learn to distinguish between temporary possessions and lasting riches.

Many people spend their lives chasing wealth, popularity, comfort, or success. While these things have their place, none of them can satisfy the deepest longing of the human heart. Only a relationship with God gives lasting peace, purpose, and eternal hope. When we truly understand the value of God’s Kingdom, our priorities naturally change.

A – Act Without Delay

Both men in the parables acted immediately. They did not postpone their decision or wait for a more convenient time. They recognized the opportunity before them and responded decisively.

God often places opportunities for us to forgive, to serve, to grow in faith, or to answer His call. Delayed obedience can become missed opportunity. Faith is demonstrated not only by what we believe but also by what we do today. Every day offers a fresh chance to choose God over lesser things.

L – Live with Eternal Perspective

Jesus also speaks about a fishing net gathering fish of every kind. Eventually, there comes a time of separation between what is good and what is not. This reminds us that our present choices have eternal consequences.

Life is not measured only by today’s achievements but by our readiness for eternity. Living with an eternal perspective changes how we treat others, spend our resources, use our time, and respond to life’s challenges. We become less concerned about temporary rewards and more committed to what truly lasts.

U – Use God’s Truth Wisely

Jesus concludes by describing a teacher who brings out treasures both old and new. Those who understand God’s Word continue learning while also sharing its timeless wisdom in fresh and meaningful ways.

Our faith should never remain hidden like a book left unopened. We are called to study God’s truth, apply it in daily life, and pass it on to others with love, humility, and wisdom. Every experience, every lesson, and every blessing can become a treasure that encourages someone else.

E – Embrace the Joy of Following Christ

The man who found the treasure sold everything with joy. His decision was not driven by fear but by overwhelming delight because he knew what he had gained.

Following Christ may require sacrifices, but every sacrifice made for Him is surpassed by the blessings of knowing Him. The joy of walking with God is deeper than worldly pleasure because it is rooted in His unfailing love and eternal promises.

Today, ask yourself: What treasure am I pursuing? Earthly treasures fade, but the Kingdom of God lasts forever. Choose what has eternal value, act on God’s invitation without delay, live with eternity in view, use His truth faithfully, and embrace the joy of belonging to Him. When Christ becomes your greatest treasure, you discover a life that nothing in this world can equal.
