7/24/2026 (Friday) Today’s gospel reading: Matthew 13:18-23

18 Jesus said to his disciples: “Hear the parable of the sower.
19 The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the Kingdom
without understanding it, and the Evil One comes and steals away what was sown in his heart.
20 The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy.
21 But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away.
22 The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit.
23 But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”

7/24/2026 (Friday) Today’s gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Matthew 13:18-23

Jesus explains the meaning of the parable of the sower. The focus is not on the seed because the seed is always good. The difference lies in the condition of the soil, which represents the human heart. The same life-giving message is heard by many people, yet it produces different results because each person receives it differently. This Gospel invites us to examine not only how often we hear God’s Word but also how deeply we allow it to transform our lives.

The word HEAR can help us remember how to become good soil for God’s truth.

H – Humble your heart.
A humble heart is teachable. Pride convinces us that we already know enough, while humility keeps us open to God’s guidance. When we admit that we need His wisdom more than our own, His Word begins to take root. Humility softens the hardened places in our hearts, making us willing to listen, learn, and obey even when His message challenges our comfort or our habits.

E – Eliminate distractions.
Many good intentions never bear fruit because they are crowded out by endless worries, unhealthy desires, and constant distractions. Today, our attention is often divided among work, social media, entertainment, and material pursuits. These are not always wrong, but they become harmful when they leave little room for God. A garden filled with weeds cannot nourish healthy plants. Likewise, a heart filled with distractions struggles to nurture a growing faith. We must intentionally remove whatever keeps us from spending time with God in prayer, reflection, and service.

A – Apply God’s Word daily.
Listening alone is not enough. The Word becomes powerful when it is put into practice. Every act of forgiveness, every honest decision, every generous deed, and every moment of compassion allows God’s truth to grow in our lives. A Bible left unopened cannot guide us, and a lesson heard but ignored cannot transform us. Small daily acts of obedience strengthen our character and deepen our relationship with the Lord. The harvest of faith is produced one faithful choice at a time.

R – Remain faithful until the harvest.
Plants do not bear fruit overnight. They need time, patience, sunlight, rain, and care. The same is true for our spiritual lives. There will be seasons of testing, disappointments, and waiting. There may be moments when we wonder whether our efforts to live faithfully are making any difference. Yet God is always at work beneath the surface. Those who continue trusting Him, even during difficult times, will eventually bear fruit that blesses not only themselves but also their families, communities, and future generations.

Today, Jesus invites us to become fertile soil rather than casual listeners. Every Mass, every prayer, every reading of Scripture, and every moment of quiet reflection is an opportunity for God’s Word to grow within us. Let us not allow hardness, shallowness, or distractions to steal the blessings God desires to give. Instead, let us HEAR with humble hearts, eliminate distractions, apply His Word every day, and remain faithful until the harvest. When we do, our lives will become living testimonies of God’s transforming grace, producing abundant fruits of faith, hope, love, and joy for His glory.
