7/18/2026 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel reading: Matthew 12:14-21
14 The Pharisees went out and took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.
15 When Jesus realized this, he withdrew from that place. Many people followed him, and he cured them all,
16 but he warned them not to make him known.
17 This was to fulfill what had been spoken through Isaiah the prophet:
18 Behold, my servant whom I have chosen,
my beloved in whom I delight;
I shall place my Spirit upon him,
and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.
19 He will not contend or cry out,
nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed he will not break,
a smouldering wick he will not quench,
until he brings justice to victory.
21 And in his name the Gentiles will hope.
7/18/2026 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Matthew 12:14-21
The Gospel reading above presents a striking contrast. While some religious leaders plotted against Jesus, He chose not to retaliate. Instead, He quietly continued His mission of healing, serving, and bringing hope to those who were hurting. Matthew shows that Jesus fulfilled God’s plan by revealing a Savior who is gentle, humble, compassionate, and victorious. His strength was not displayed through force but through faithful love. This passage reminds us that God’s kingdom advances through mercy, truth, and unwavering hope.
In a world where anger often answers anger and hatred is met with hatred, Jesus chose a different path. Even when people opposed Him, He remained faithful to His mission. His life teaches us that true strength is found in love, humility, and perseverance. The word HOPE helps us remember four life-changing lessons from this Gospel.
H – Hold on to God’s Mission
Jesus knew that opposition would come. Instead of allowing criticism or hostility to distract Him, He remained focused on what His Father had called Him to do. He continued to heal, teach, and care for people.
We also face distractions, disappointments, and even unfair treatment. Sometimes people misunderstand our intentions or fail to appreciate our efforts. If we allow every criticism to discourage us, we may abandon the very work God has entrusted to us.
Hold firmly to God’s purpose for your life. Keep serving, keep loving, and keep trusting Him. Success is not measured by applause but by faithfulness to God’s calling.
O – Overflow with Gentleness
Many people think strength means being loud, forceful, or always proving they are right. Jesus demonstrated a different kind of strength. His gentleness attracted the weary, the broken, and those who had lost hope.
Gentleness is not weakness. It is strength that is under God’s control. A gentle person knows when to speak and when to remain silent, when to correct and when to comfort.
Our families, workplaces, churches, and communities desperately need people whose words heal instead of wound. A gentle spirit often opens doors that arguments can never unlock.
When Christ fills our hearts, His gentleness naturally flows through our attitudes and actions.
P – Persevere Through Opposition
The enemies of Jesus sought to stop Him, yet they could not stop God’s plan. Every challenge became another opportunity for God’s purpose to shine.
We, too, encounter setbacks, rejection, and seasons of waiting. There are moments when doing what is right seems difficult and unrewarded. Yet God calls us to remain faithful.
Perseverance is built one faithful step at a time. Every act of obedience, every prayer, every quiet sacrifice matters in God’s eyes. He is working even when we cannot immediately see the results.
Do not let temporary opposition keep you from your eternal purpose.
E – Extend Hope to Everyone
Jesus welcomed those whom society often overlooked. The weak, discouraged, and forgotten found new life in His presence. He became a source of hope for people who believed they had none.
Our world is filled with individuals carrying invisible burdens—loneliness, fear, grief, disappointment, and uncertainty. As followers of Christ, we are called to become channels of that same hope.
Sometimes hope is extended through a listening ear, a forgiving heart, a helping hand, an encouraging word, or a simple act of kindness. We may never fully know how deeply one compassionate action can change another person’s life.
Choose each day to be someone who lifts others rather than discourages them. Let your life point people toward the hope that only Christ can give.
So, whenever you see or hear the word HOPE, remember these four spiritual truths:
H – Hold on to God’s Mission
O – Overflow with Gentleness
P – Persevere Through Opposition
E – Extend Hope to Everyone
The world often celebrates power, popularity, and personal success. Jesus shows us a better way—the way of humility, compassion, endurance, and hope. When we walk in His footsteps, we become living reminders that God’s light still shines in dark places. No matter how great the opposition, God’s purpose will prevail, His gentleness will transform hearts, and His hope will continue to bring life to all who trust in Him.
