6/15/2026 (Monday) Today’s Gospel reading: Matthew 5:38-42

Jesus said to his disciples:
38 “You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
39 But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well.
40 If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your cloak as well.
41 Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles.
42 Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow.”

6/15/2026 (Monday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Matthew 5:38-42

This Gospel passage presents one of the most challenging teachings of Jesus. Human nature often tells us to fight back, get even, and protect our rights at all costs. Yet Jesus invites us to a higher way, the way of grace, generosity, and love. He teaches that true strength is not found in revenge but in a heart transformed by God’s love.

A simple way to remember this message is through the word GIVE.

G – Go Beyond Retaliation

Jesus calls His followers to break the cycle of revenge. When someone hurts us, our first reaction may be to strike back with words, actions, or resentment. However, responding with patience and kindness can stop conflict from growing. Going beyond retaliation does not mean approving wrongdoing; it means refusing to let anger control our hearts. A peaceful response often has greater power than an angry one.

I – Imitate God’s Mercy

God continually shows mercy to us despite our weaknesses and failures. Jesus invites us to reflect that same mercy toward others. When we forgive, show understanding, and choose compassion over bitterness, we become living witnesses of God’s character. Mercy does not make us weak; it reveals the strength of a heart rooted in faith.

V – Value People More Than Pride

Many conflicts continue because pride gets in the way. We want to win arguments, prove ourselves right, or protect our reputation. Jesus challenges us to value relationships and people more than our ego. Sometimes peace requires letting go of the need to have the last word. When we choose humility, we create room for healing and reconciliation.

In daily life, this may mean listening patiently to a difficult coworker, responding gently to criticism, or choosing understanding instead of judgment. Every act of humility becomes an opportunity to reflect Christ’s love.

E – Extend Generosity

The passage also teaches a spirit of generosity. Jesus encourages His followers to be willing to help, share, and serve beyond what is expected. In a world that often asks, “What can I get?” Christians are called to ask, “What can I give?”

Generosity is not limited to money. We can give our time to someone who is lonely, offer encouragement to someone discouraged, share our talents, or provide practical help to those in need. A generous heart reflects God’s abundant goodness.

The message of this Gospel reading is a call to live differently from the world around us. Instead of revenge, choose grace. Instead of pride, choose humility. Instead of selfishness, choose generosity. When we GIVE, that is, Going Beyond Retaliation, Imitating God’s Mercy, Valuing People More Than Pride, and Extending Generosity, we become instruments of God’s peace.

Today, ask yourself: How can I give more love than anger, more mercy than judgment, and more kindness than resentment? Every time we choose this path, we reveal the heart of Christ to the world and experience the freedom that comes from living according to His ways.
