13 Jesus said to his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
15 Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.
16 Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”
6/9/2026 (Tuesday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Matthew 5:13-16
The Gospel reading above presents one of Jesus’ most practical teachings. He compares His followers to salt and light, two ordinary things that make an extraordinary difference. Salt preserves, enhances flavor, and prevents decay. Light removes darkness, reveals the right path, and brings warmth and hope. The message is clear: God calls us not merely to exist in the world but to positively influence it.
In today’s world, being salt and light is more important than ever. We live in a time of division, misinformation, loneliness, anxiety, and moral confusion. Instead of complaining about the darkness, Christians are called to shine. Instead of criticizing the decay around us, we are called to preserve what is good, what is true, and what is beautiful.
A simple way to remember how to be salt and light is through the mnemonic S.H.I.N.E.
S – Serve Others
Look for opportunities to help without expecting recognition. Assist an elderly neighbor, volunteer in community projects, mentor a struggling student, or simply listen to someone who needs encouragement. Service makes God’s love visible.
H – Honor Truth
In a world filled with rumors, fake news, and half-truths, choose honesty. Refuse to spread gossip. Admit mistakes. Keep promises. Let your words be trustworthy both online and offline.
I – Inspire Hope
Many people carry hidden burdens. A kind message, a sincere compliment, a prayer, or a word of encouragement can change someone’s day. Hope is one of the brightest lights we can share.
N – Nurture Goodness
Promote what is wholesome and uplifting. Support charitable causes, protect the environment, respect human dignity, and encourage virtues such as kindness, patience, and generosity. Goodness grows when it is intentionally cultivated.
E – Example Christlike Living
Actions often speak louder than words. Be patient with difficult people, forgive those who hurt you, remain calm during conflicts, and treat everyone with respect. Your life may be the only sermon some people ever hear.
Consider how this applies in daily life. A student becomes salt and light by refusing to cheat and by helping classmates learn. A teacher becomes salt and light by treating every student fairly. A businessperson becomes salt and light by practicing integrity even when dishonesty would be more profitable. Parents become salt and light by modeling love, faith, and responsibility at home. Social media users become salt and light by sharing encouragement instead of negativity, truth instead of misinformation, and respect instead of insults.
Even small actions matter. Holding a door open, thanking a worker, visiting a sick friend, donating to those in need, forgiving an old grievance, or standing up for someone being mistreated can illuminate a dark corner of the world.
The wonderful truth is that light does not need to be large to be effective. A single candle can brighten a dark room. Likewise, one person living with faith, kindness, integrity, and courage can influence a family, a workplace, a school, or even an entire community.
Every morning, ask yourself: “How can I S.H.I.N.E. today?” When you serve, honor truth, inspire hope, nurture goodness, and set a Christlike example, you become the salt that preserves goodness and the light that points others toward God.
