* Arnel Santos describes his upbringing in Tondo, Manila, as one defined by significant financial hardship. As the eldest of three children, he grew up in a household where neither parent had finished college due to a lack of resources; his father had to abandon his electrical engineering studies at the University of the East because the family simply could not afford the tuition. Growing up in a environment where “street smarts” were a necessity for survival, Santos has often reflected on the “walang pera” (no money) reality of his youth that prevented his parents from advancing their own educations.
Despite these struggles, he was able to finish college through the support of an extended family network and his own academic merit. His primary benefactor was a great aunt, a widow who was already raising eight children of her own but chose to share her limited resources to help his father make ends meet and cover Arnel’s educational expenses.
