Biography
Born in Takoma Park, Maryland, Moore faced significant early personal hardship when his father, Westley, died of a rare but treatable virus when Wes was just three years old. Following this loss, his mother, Joy, moved the family to the Bronx to live with his grandparents. He eventually returned to Maryland at age 14.
Moore’s path was shaped by a combination of military discipline and academic excellence. His commitment to service was solidified as a paratrooper and captain in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, where he led troops in combat during the war in Afghanistan. Upon his return to the United States, his career spanned the worlds of high finance at Deutsche Bank and Citigroup, as well as high-level public service as a White House Fellow under Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
Before his transition into elected office, Moore became a household name through his literary and philanthropic endeavors. He authored the New York Times bestseller The Other Wes Moore, a deeply personal narrative that juxtaposes his life with that of another man from the same neighborhood with the same name who ended up serving a life sentence for murder. This work served as a catalyst for his broader mission to combat systemic poverty. From 2017 to 2021, he channeled this mission into his role as CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation, where he managed hundreds of millions of dollars in grants aimed at uplifting impoverished communities in New York City and beyond.
In 2022, Moore made history by being elected as the 63rd Governor of Maryland, becoming the state’s first Black governor and only the third Black person ever elected to the governorship in American history. Since taking office in January 2023, his administration has operated under the mantra of “leaving no one behind.” His tenure has been characterized by significant investments in public education, record-low unemployment rates, and decisive leadership during crises, most notably during the recovery efforts following the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in 2024.
