December 12 2025 Gospel Reading and Reflection

12/12/2025 (Friday) Today’s Gospel reading: Luke 1:39-47

39 And Mary rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste into a city of Judah.
40 And she entered into the house of Zechariah and saluted Elizabeth.
41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leapt in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
42 cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
43 And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leapt for joy.
45 Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”
46 And Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
47 my spirit rejoices in God my saviour.”

12/12/2025 (Friday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Luke 1:39-47

n the story of Mary’s visit to Elizabeth, we witness a moment overflowing with joy, affirmation, and the quiet but powerful movement of God in ordinary lives. Mary had just received a life-changing message—one that could have overwhelmed her with fear, uncertainty, or doubt. Instead of isolating herself, she chose to journey toward someone who could understand her situation. Elizabeth, already experiencing her own miracle, welcomed Mary with encouragement, blessing, and deep spiritual recognition. Their meeting became a sacred space where God’s work was celebrated, and courage was strengthened.

In our world today, many people carry experiences that feel heavy or confusing such as new responsibilities, unexpected challenges, or surprising opportunities that come with both excitement and anxiety. Like Mary, we sometimes find ourselves holding promises that seem too big for us. And like Elizabeth, there are people around us who need welcome, affirmation, and companionship in their journey.

Imagine a young woman who just discovered she will be a mother earlier than planned. Fears about finances, family expectations, and the future swirl in her heart. But when she opens up to a trusted friend, that friend responds not with judgment but with compassion and practical help. In that moment, hope awakens. Or think of someone who feels called to start a small community project such as feeding the homeless, helping students with free tutoring, or organizing prayer gatherings. It feels overwhelming at first, but when a mentor encourages them and affirms the good within their heart, confidence begins to grow.

This is the beauty of the encounter between Mary and Elizabeth: it teaches us that God often strengthens us through the presence of others. Their meeting shows how spiritual support transforms uncertainty into joy, and how shared faith multiplies courage. Grace becomes more visible when celebrated together.

Another striking part of their encounter is the overflowing joy that springs from recognizing God’s work even before its fulfillment. Mary had not yet seen the long-term outcome of her mission, but her heart already rejoiced because she trusted God’s faithfulness. This is a powerful message for anyone going through a season of waiting, transition, or hidden beginnings.

Consider someone starting therapy after years of silent struggle. Healing is still a long road ahead, but the very first step becomes a source of deep, quiet joy. Or imagine a small business owner rebuilding after a loss. Nothing is stable yet, but the mere act of trying again fills the heart with renewed hope. Joy does not wait for everything to be perfect; it grows whenever we recognize God’s presence in the journey.

The meeting of Mary and Elizabeth invites us to three responses. First, to seek community rather than carrying burdens alone. Second, to be a source of blessing, encouragement, and affirmation to those who come to us with trembling hearts. And third, to cultivate joy that flows not from visible results but from trusting that God is at work, even in hidden and humble beginnings.

In every season of life, God is quietly moving. And like Mary, we can choose to rejoice because even when the path is unfamiliar, His faithfulness is sure.
