6/26/2025 (Thursday) Today’s Gospel reading: Matthew 7:21-29

Jesus said to his disciples:
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.
22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?’
23 Then I will declare to them solemnly, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers.’
24 “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.
25 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock.
26 And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand.
27 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined.”
28 When Jesus finished these words, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.

6/26/2025 (Thursday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Matthew 7:21-29

In our world today, appearances matter and many people know how to say the right things, dress the right way, and even perform admirable acts. Yet there comes a moment when appearances are tested, not by people, but by life itself. And when the storms of life come, only those whose lives are grounded on something deeper than words or image can truly stand firm.

In the final part of His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus challenges us to go beyond mere lip service. It’s not enough to simply call oneself a believer or to perform good deeds in His name. What truly matters is obedience, a heart that listens to God and lives out His teachings.

Imagine two builders. One is wise, thoughtful, and deliberate. He digs deep and lays a solid foundation before building his house. The other is quick, eager to see results, and builds straight on the sand. Both houses look fine on sunny days, but when the rain falls and the wind howls, only one remains standing. This image is not just about architecture; it’s a metaphor for life. Your choices, your values, your relationship with God becomes your foundation.

Many times, we go for spiritual shortcuts. It’s tempting to think that having the right beliefs or saying a few prayers is enough. But faith is not a set of rituals or labels; it’s a relationship demonstrated in daily living. Just like love in a marriage isn’t proven by saying “I love you” alone, but by consistent acts of care, so too is our love for God shown by the way we live out His word.

Consider Maria, a Sunday school teacher for over twenty years. She sang in the choir, prayed loudly in public, and quoted Scripture with ease. But at home, her children feared her anger, and her husband felt neglected. Over time, her public ministry collapsed, not because she lost her voice, but because the cracks in her character could no longer be hidden. Her life was built on the sand of performance, not the rock of transformation.

Contrast that with Raul, a janitor at a local hospital. Few noticed him. He didn’t lead Bible studies or preach. But he treated every patient and co-worker with kindness. He forgave easily, gave generously from his small salary, and prayed sincerely for others. When he passed away, the hospital chapel was full, not because he was well-known, but because he quietly lived out what he believed. Raul’s life was built on a solid foundation.

True discipleship is not about grand gestures but consistent obedience. It’s the unseen decisions to choose honesty when lying would be easier, to forgive when you’re hurt, to serve when no one applauds. It’s in these quiet, often unnoticed moments that the structure of your life is either being fortified or weakened.

Storms are inevitable. Health can falter. Finances can crumble. Relationships can be tested. When these happen, you will discover what your life is truly anchored to. If your faith is only surface-level, if it hasn’t taken root in your daily actions and choices, you may find yourself shaken. But if your life is built on deep obedience such as on hearing and living the word of God, you will stand, not because of your strength, but because of your foundation.

So today, ask yourself: What am I building my life upon? Am I merely saying the right things, or am I doing them? Am I rooted in truth, or am I carried by the tides of convenience and comfort?

Let us not be content with appearances. Let us dig deep, build wisely, and choose daily obedience. In doing so, we won’t just survive the storms. We will shine through them, as witnesses of a life anchored in God.
