5/25/2025 (Sunday) Today’s Gospel reading: John 14:23-29
23 Jesus said to his disciples: “Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him.
24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words, yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me.
25 “I have told you this while I am with you.
26 The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.
28 You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away and I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I.
29 And now I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe.”
5/25/2025 (Sunday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: John 14:23-29
As Jesus prepares His disciples for His physical departure, He offers profound peace and the promise of His presence. His words are not only historical but eternally relevant. He speaks directly to every heart that longs for assurance, love, and rest.
Jesus begins by saying, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” This is no ordinary promise. God does not offer to merely visit us. He offers to dwell with us. The Creator of the universe desires intimacy with us. Not distant observation, but abiding presence. When we love Him and live by His Word, we experience the nearness of God in a way that changes everything. Our homes, our hearts, our daily lives become holy ground.
But Jesus goes further. He knows that His disciples, and all of us, will face moments of confusion, doubt, and fear. So He assures them: “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” What a gift this is. We are not left to walk this journey alone. The Holy Spirit is not just a comforter; He is a divine teacher, guide, and companion. He whispers truth to our hearts when the world shouts lies. He brings to memory the words of Jesus when we most need them. He anchors us in God’s promises.
Then comes one of the most beautiful verses in all of Scripture: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Jesus is not offering temporary relief or worldly comfort. His peace is not the absence of trouble, but the presence of unwavering trust. It is a peace rooted not in circumstance but in His character. When Jesus gives peace, it is complete. It silences fear. It calms anxiety. It guards our hearts and minds beyond human understanding.
This peace is especially powerful when we face transitions, losses, or uncertainties. Just as the disciples were about to lose the physical presence of their Lord, we too encounter seasons when we feel alone or unsure. But Jesus reminds us: “I am going away and I am coming back to you.” His departure was not abandonment. It was preparation. Through His death and resurrection, He made a way for eternal fellowship. And through the Spirit, He remains with us, even now.
Finally, Jesus says, “I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.” He prepares our hearts in advance, not to scare us, but to strengthen us. His foreknowledge is our foundation. When storms come, we can hold tightly to His Word, trusting that nothing surprises Him. He is sovereign. He is good. And He is always near.
So today, let your heart be lifted. You are not alone. The Father loves you. Jesus has made His home with you. The Holy Spirit lives within you. And the peace of Christ is yours, not as the world gives, but as Heaven gives. Deep, abiding, eternal peace. Let that truth shape your thoughts, your decisions, your relationships, and your dreams. You are loved. You are held. You are never forsaken.
