May 22 2022 Gospel Reading and Reflection: John 14:23-29

A reading from the gospel according to John 14:23-29:

23 Jesus said to his disciples: “Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him.
24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words, yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me.
25 “I have told you this while I am with you.
26 The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.
28 You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away and I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I.
29 And now I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe.”

Reflection: Christian Life

1. Only with the help of the Holy Spirit can we be able to understand the truth about God. Even the apostles who were with Jesus up close for three long years did not fully grasp many things that the Lord was teaching them. It was only when the Advocate descended upon them that they were enlightened and empowered. We pray therefore for the Holy Spirit to come and change the face of the earth including us.

2. Remove Christ in the label Christian and what is left are the letters “ian” which can stand for “I am nothing”. That is why Christ should be the front, center, and back of Christian life. That means everything a Christian says and does must reflect the love of Jesus who dwells in him or her.

3. The peace that Jesus gives to us is real. He enjoins us not to let our hearts be troubled by the concerns of this world. Though suffering comes on a daily basis, we are able to have peace of mind because we fully trust in the power of Jesus who gives us strength and who Himself had overcome the greatest suffering of all.

4. Sometimes we envy the Apostles and the other people who actually walked physically with Jesus some two thousand years ago. Yet Jesus Himself said that we are blessed because we believe in Him though we have not seen Him (John 20:29). In fact, we are more than blessed because we have the scripture and His messengers to tell us what happened. Therefore, the life of a Christian should be a living testimony of what he or she reads in the Scripture and what he or she hears from His messengers.

5. Keeping the word of Jesus does not mean we keep it to ourselves only. The truth is it was been never for oneself only. It must be passed on to others and to the next generation until God is all in all. “As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you” (John 20:21). The big challenge therefore for every Christian is the task of spreading the Word around.

Dear Jesus, how blessed I am to know that you dwell in me. Thank you for the gift of peace and joy. Help me to share it with others too. Amen.
