March 15 2025 Gospel Reading and Reflection

3/15/2025 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel reading: Matthew 5:43-48

Jesus said to his disciples:
43 “You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.
44 But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you,
45 that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.
46 For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have? Do not the tax collectors do the same?
47 And if you greet your brothers and sisters only, what is unusual about that? Do not the pagans do the same?
48 So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

3/15/2025 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Matthew 5:43-48

Jesus’ words in this Gospel passage challenge us to love beyond what is natural, beyond what the world expects. Loving those who love us is easy, but loving our enemies? That requires divine grace. This teaching goes against our human instincts of self-preservation and retaliation. Yet, Jesus calls us to a radical love—a love that reflects the heart of God.

In a world where hatred and division seem to be the norm, this passage reminds us that true disciples of Christ are set apart by love. Not just any love, but the kind that reaches even those who have wronged us. This is not weakness; it is strength. It is the love that Jesus demonstrated on the cross when He prayed for those who crucified Him: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34).

Why Should We Love Our Enemies?
1. It Reflects God’s Character
Jesus points out that God does not withhold His blessings from the unrighteous. The sun shines on both the good and the wicked; the rain falls on both the righteous and the sinner. If God, in His infinite mercy, shows kindness to all, shouldn’t we, as His children, do the same? When we love our enemies, we mirror our Father’s love and demonstrate that we are truly His.

2. It Sets Us Apart as True Followers of Christ
The world expects people to love their friends and hate their enemies. But Jesus challenges us to rise above the standards of the world. When we choose love over hatred, forgiveness over revenge, and peace over conflict, we stand as a testimony to God’s transforming power.

3. It Frees Us from Bitterness
Holding onto hatred only imprisons us in bitterness. When we love our enemies and pray for them, we release ourselves from the chains of resentment. Love liberates us. It allows us to experience the peace and joy that come from living in obedience to Christ.

4. It Can Lead Others to Christ
Many people expect hostility in return for hostility. But when we respond to hate with love, it can soften even the hardest hearts. Our kindness can plant seeds of faith in those who do not yet know God. As Romans 12:20 says, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” Love has the power to transform.

How Can We Love Our Enemies?
Pray for Them – It may not be easy at first, but bringing our enemies before God in prayer can change our hearts and theirs. Ask God to bless them, to open their eyes to His truth, and to give you the strength to forgive.

1. Speak Kindly – Instead of responding with harsh words, choose words that bring peace. A soft answer can defuse anger and create opportunities for reconciliation.

2. Show Kindness – Find practical ways to demonstrate love. A kind gesture, a helping hand, or even a simple smile can break down barriers of hatred.

3. Forgive from the Heart – Forgiveness is not condoning wrongdoing; it is releasing the burden of anger. Jesus forgave those who crucified Him. As His followers, we are called to do the same.

Jesus concludes this passage with a high calling: “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48). This perfection is not about being flawless but about growing in love, mercy, and grace. It is about striving each day to become more like Jesus.

Loving our enemies is not easy, but it is possible through Christ who strengthens us. When we love like Jesus, we bring light into darkness, peace into conflict, and hope into despair. This is the love that changes the world — one heart at a time.

Let us ask God today for the grace to love beyond limits, to forgive beyond reason, and to shine His light in the darkest places. For when we love like this, we truly live as children of our Father in heaven.
