12/22/2024 (Sunday) Today’s Gospel reading: Luke 1:39-45
39 Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah,
40 where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
42 cried out in a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
43 And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
45 Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled.”
12/22/2024 (Sunday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Luke 1:39-45
This Gospel passage offers a glimpse into what it means to be truly blessed. In a world where blessings are often measured by material wealth or earthly success, Scripture gives us a deeper, richer understanding of this word. Let’s reflect on three dimensions of “blessedness” found in this story.
1. Blessed in Calling
Elizabeth declares Mary blessed because she has been chosen by God for an extraordinary purpose—to bear His Son, the Savior of the world. Her calling, though unique, reminds us that true blessing begins when God calls us to be part of His divine plan.
Each of us has a calling. While it may not be as monumental as Mary’s, it is equally significant in God’s eyes. Whether we are called to lead, serve, teach, or encourage, the blessing lies in being chosen by God to fulfill His will.
This reminds us that our identity and worth are not defined by what the world sees but by what God has purposed for us. You are blessed when you walk in your God-given calling, knowing that He equips and strengthens you for the journey.
2. Blessed in Faith
Elizabeth praises Mary’s faith: “Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her.” Mary’s blessing was not just in her calling but in her response of faith. Despite the uncertainty and potential shame of her situation, Mary believed God’s word without hesitation.
Faith is the foundation of true blessedness. It means trusting God’s promises even when we don’t see the outcome. It means surrendering our fears and uncertainties to the One who holds the future.
Like Mary, we are blessed when we believe in God’s promises—when we trust that His plans are good, His timing is perfect, and His love for us is unchanging. Faith transforms us, allowing us to see beyond our circumstances and rest in His sovereign will.
3. Blessed in Relationship
This moment between Mary and Elizabeth shows the beauty of a shared faith journey. Elizabeth, inspired by the Holy Spirit, encourages Mary, affirming the greatness of what God is doing in her life. In their relationship, we see that true blessing is not experienced in isolation but in connection with others.
God often uses relationships to affirm His work in our lives. When we share our joys, struggles, and testimonies with fellow believers, we are strengthened in faith and reminded of His goodness. To be blessed is not only to receive but also to give — encouraging others as Elizabeth encouraged Mary.
Living a Blessed Life
The passage invites us to redefine what it means to be blessed. It is not about possessions or comfort but about being aligned with God’s purpose, trusting His promises, and walking in community.
Ask yourself: Where is God calling me? Am I responding with faith? How can I bless others as part of my journey?
To live as “blessed” is to live in the fullness of God’s grace, confident in His promises, and ready to share His love with the world. Let us embrace this deeper understanding and proclaim, like Mary and Elizabeth, the greatness of our God.
