12/21/2024 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel reading: Luke 1:39-45

39 And Mary rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste into a city of Judah.
40 And she entered into the house of Zechariah and saluted Elizabeth.
41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
42 cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
43 And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
45 Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”

12/21/2024 (Saturday) Today’s Gospel reflection / homily / sermon: Luke 1:39-45

We find in this Gospel reading a touching encounter between two extraordinary women, Mary and Elizabeth, both carrying miraculous promises from God. Mary, a young virgin, is carrying Jesus, the Savior of the world. Elizabeth, an older woman thought to be barren, is carrying John, the forerunner of Christ. When Mary visits Elizabeth, something remarkable happens: Elizabeth’s baby leaps in her womb, and she is filled with the Holy Spirit. Elizabeth exclaims, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!” She also declares Mary blessed for believing that God would fulfill His promises to her.

This passage radiates with faith, humility, and the joy that comes from trusting God’s promises. Let’s explore three key lessons we can draw from this powerful moment.

1. Faith Brings Blessings
Elizabeth recognizes that Mary is blessed not just because of her unique role but because of her faith. Mary believed what the angel told her: that she would conceive by the Holy Spirit and bear the Son of God. Her response was simple and profound: “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38).

Faith is trusting God even when His promises seem impossible or beyond understanding. Like Mary, we may face moments when God’s plans for our lives feel overwhelming. Yet, when we trust Him, we open ourselves to blessings far greater than we can imagine.

2. Community Strengthens Faith
Mary’s journey to visit Elizabeth was not just a family visit. It was a divine appointment. Elizabeth’s words encouraged Mary, affirming the truth of what God was doing in her life.

In our spiritual journeys, we need the support of others who share our faith. God places people in our lives to encourage and remind us of His promises. When we face doubts or challenges, a loving community can help us hold on to hope. Let us, like Elizabeth, be voices of affirmation and encouragement to those around us.

3. Joy Comes from Recognizing God’s Work
When Elizabeth’s baby leapt for joy, it was a response to the presence of the Savior. Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, recognized the significance of Mary’s visit and rejoiced in God’s work unfolding before her eyes.

Joy is a natural response to recognizing God’s hand in our lives. It may not always be tied to external circumstances but flows from knowing that God is faithful and His promises are true. When we take time to reflect on His blessings, our hearts are filled with gratitude and praise.

A Call to Action
As we meditate on this passage, let us reflect on our own faith. Are we trusting God with our lives, even when His promises seem distant? Are we surrounding ourselves with a community that strengthens our faith? Are we taking time to recognize and celebrate the work of God in and around us?

May we, like Mary and Elizabeth, respond to God’s promises with faith, encourage one another in love, and rejoice in His miraculous work. In doing so, we will find ourselves truly blessed, just as they were.
